I'm trying to get the most performance I can out of this automatic. I lost the full use of my right leg due to a spinal chord injury, so I can't push a clutch pedal.  I operate the gas and brake with my left foot and have for 12 years, now. I don't have the money for a SMG. Maybe I'll be able to afford an e60 M5 in like 12 years.  But my driving style and the Dinan stage 4 upgrade to 309 hp tore up the stock transmission, bad.  Then tore up the used one I used as a replacement.  Now my friend has rebuilt that shell with a heavy duty torque converter and a silicon performance kit.  Hope it can take it.

My E39 540 posing up on the Blue Ridge Parkway after the last bunch of mods (the Bavarian Autosport Sport Suspension kit, rear M5 trunklid spoiler, and black M5 mirrors.)

Here is how she looked when I got her. Previous owner neglected an expensive suspension job, so I got a great deal. I took that oppurtunity to add a navigation/multimedia/sound system plus some performance and cosmetic mods.

Cosmetic Modifications;
Angel Eyes with black out corners
Blacked out tailights
18" Breyton Replicas (Black with machine lip)
Blacked out license plate
Clear side markers
Black and white BMW emblems on hood, trunk, and wheels
20% window tint all around
M-style Front Bumper
Black Body Moldings
'02 grill (black w/ chrome lip)
New Floor Mats
De-badged
Black M5 mirrors
M5 trunk lid spoiler

Lowered on Bavarian Autosport Suspension kit

1965airlane's 1997 BMW 5-Series MY 540 HAS GONE THRU A COMPLETE MOTOR SWAP. I got a super clean M62, with 77,000 out of a M package 540.

Performance Modifications;

M62 B44 Motor swap with a '99 M-Sport Package 540 with 77,000 miles.

DINAN; Cold Air Intake;High Flow Air Mass Meter; Free Flow Exhaust; Stage 4 Engine Software; Stage 4 Automatic Transmission Software

Transmission was rebuilt.

Heavy duty torque converter & silicon performance kit

Lowered about an 1.5" in the rear and almost 2" in the front with....

Bavarian Autosport Sport Springs w/ Bilstein shocks and struts

Front Shock Tower Brace

18" Breyton Replicas (Black with machine lip)
staggered 8.5" front & 9.5" rear

BF GOODRICH G-FORCES's 245/40 ZR18 in front & 265/35 ZR18 in back

M-style Front Bumper

M5 trunk lid spoiler

Man, the DINAN upgrades and that 309 HP is everything I could have imagined and more. Driving this car is what I want to do all the time now. That M62 B44 just rumbles through that DINAN exhaust, and with this thing breathing right its responsiveness is so much snappier, especially with the transmission rebuild and DINAN software

.

Navigation/multimedia/sound system;
Pioneer AVIC-D3 DVD Multimedia AV Navigation Server w/ iPOD adapter in the armrest compartment and bluetooth cellphone integration with microphone.
Pair of 140 W FOCAL K2 Power 130 KP w/ seperate TN 52 Tweeter and Crossover
mounted in the doors in front
Pair of 120 W FOCAL Polyglass 130 CV1 in rear
JL Audio 250/1 & 300/4 Amplifiers
JL Audio 13.5" Sub in vented box
K40 Radar Detector (hard lined)

The amp rack is mounted on the back of the rear seats in the trunk, behind the sub-box.

I love my PIONEER AVIC-D3. The navigation system is AWESOME. The iPod integration is AWESOME. The touch screen interface; AWESOME. The picture quality for both videos from the iPod and dvds is great. I also just got a sweet deal on the bluetooth adapter for the AVIC-D3 ($90 off eBay). It integrated my phone. Answering and placing calls thru the touchscreen and included microphone without ever taking my phone out of my pocket is so SWEET & SAFE.

         An E39 M5 was for sale in my neighborhood and I took these pics before I lowered my 540.

checkout these great pics from this great article on bmwm5.com where their plan was to drive a E60 M5 from Stockholm, Sweden to the Swedish supersportscar manufacturer Koenigsegg on Friday evening. The following Saturday they scheduled a factory presentation as well as to use their 1,6 km long landing strip to test and document the E60 M5 vs. M5 E39 of 2000 model year (5 liter V8 with 400 HP) and the E34 M5 Touring (340 HP straight-6 with a displacement of 3,8 liters) of 1995 model year. Later that evening the plans was to drive to Denmarks capital Copenhagen and then on the Saturday evening back home to Stockhol m.".

Thanks man. I think the E39 had the fatter kidney grills with the 2001 facelift. I still need to order a black out grill and the shadowline pieces to get ride of the chrome around the windows.
