Rear axle removed, the axle was easy, the leafs were a B!#&@$ !!!


One Lincoln Locker'ed Ford 7.5" Ta'Da!

I have a arc welder and a Canadian Tire caliber Mig, so for all of this the arc was used. If YOU want to weld your diff
without takeing the spider carrier and ring gear out be VERYVERYVERY careful. We drained the diff, filled it with rags and spent some time cutting up specially shaped pieces of tin to cover the ring gear. You MUST NOT get any slag on the ring gear, if you do it wont last long, I hope it's a trail only rig, lol. Even with all these procautions I had a miserable time getting all the slag and flux out of the diff afterwards. I positoned the diff so the driveshaft was pointed up then I sat under it and carefully chipped out the flux. You have to be sure to get all of it. Be patient and use a punch/chisel. Then I blew it out with an air gun and vacuumed anything else. I had to re-do my diff cover gasket 3 weeks later and when I did I still found flux. Not the end of the world for me, this isn't my daily driver. If you are welding the diff on your daily driver I would recommend taking the ring gear out and welding the spiders on a welding bench. This means you have to re-install the ring gear, and that is a task that requires alot of patience and intimidates me, because you can do it wrong and have you diff blow up once you've driven 10 miles from home. Which leaves you bying new gears (again?) and having to re-do the install.

Now comes the drivers side bracket, I used the existing bracket and just added on to it, and re-enforced it, because now it is a longer leaver. (like adding a snipe to a wrench, more torque/stress will be applied to the pivot point, thats why it needs re-enforced) Sorry only one pic of it is handy on my comp.

I also extend my radius arms. I ground the weld out and drove the pin with threads on it out and then scrounged up a cool hexagonal shaft from out metal stock and cut two equal lengths. I turned down about 3 inches of the hex shaft to be a press fit into the back of the raidus arm and welded in it. Then purchased some 3/4" hemi rod ends and threaded them into the other end of the hex shaft. I also had to build new mounting points for the longer radius arms, I positioned them right in front of the transmission mount. Had I know a little more when I did this I would have build a new frame cross member that would have allowed me to move the radius arm mounting point up a little bit and IN a little more. My 32" rubber rubs against the radius arm near the end of steering travel. If the radius arm mount was more towards the center of the rig instead of even with the frame this might be solved.

I have seen some clever, creative, and most importantly effective ways to cage their coil springs. Initially I didn't think this was a big deal, "where is the spring going to go?" I thought. Well, it doesn't matter where it goes, if it leaves the spring bucket your screwed. I had this happen one day as I was on my way home from a friends house, it was dark out and I did not enjoy the experience. This is how I solved it, two wrap's of 1/4" aircraft cable, try and leave the spring bucket now!

Skyjacker Nitro shocks the whole way around.
The shocks ride good, good enough that I would recommend them. The lift allows for lots more flex than stock, and the shocks do not limit my flex any,
so far. My tires hit the spring bucket on the up travel side of things, and on the droop side the limiting factor is my coils, they pick the tire up before I reach the end of the shock travel. I still want more flex, I don't know how much more I can get out of the front, I think I have about 13" of wheel travel. I plan on getting some more from the rear.

Some time in the future I plan on fabbing a frame cross member above the rear axle so I can mount my rear shocks at an angle and the shocks form a trapezoid with the axle.
It might look something like this.

Belltech lower shackles for chevy's. (part# 6400?? I don't remember)

New shackles for the rear. I know, I could have easily extended my existing shackles myself right? Ya, if it they had come off the truck in one piece, I might have, but for $50 (??) this was a simple, easy solution. (Sidenote, I had to cut my tailpipe so the exhaust comes out of the rear of the truck now, instead of of out the passenger side) The belltech shackles were only part of the equation. I gained my 6" on lift of the rear by adding:
1: the Belltech shackles
2: A pair or add-A-leaf's from eBay
3: A pair of 2" blocks
4: Swapping in Ford Exploder springs
I think my add-A-leafs are limiting my flex on the rear, I may remove them as well as one of the explorer leaflets and get 3" or 4" blocks instead. I'd rather have tall blocks and soft leafs on the rear, I know lot's of guys don't like blocks, but they tend to have/spend more money than me. haha. The soft leafs will give me LOTSAAA flex, and as Todd says "Flexy is Sexy"

Left and right leafs, showing the difference in travel, I wish I had more, I may take some leaflets out. (Notice the mangled brakeline on the left side, F U tree.)

This is a 32 x 10.5 tire, next tires I'm getting will be 33's. One day if I get hardcore I will cut fenders and run 35's or 36's.

This picture (below) was taken right after that ^ one. Notice the tire touching the coil bucket, and the remaining 1" of travel on the shock. I see wider offset rims in my future.
