 Fiberglass 2nd Row Center Console

The center console for the rear seats will be multi-functional...the hide away units for the Pioneer pieces will be mounted inside the main body. There will be 2 Farenheit Elite EXCI-23 23" screens mounted off the back of it behind the seat backs, 2 dedicated Farenheit DVD players for the screens in the front & 2 Audiocontrol Matrix Line Drivers & 2 Audiocontrol MVC Master Volume Control units, 1 of each on each side behind the seat backs.

Mounting boxes for the 2 Farenheit Elite EXCI-23 screens.

The boxes for the Soundstream SST4.0 speakers were the exact height for mock-up of the screens...go figure!

The main profile for the console will shadow the profiles of the seat sides.

Fabricating the main armrest area for the center console will be done seperately from the main console body. It we be done this way so that it can be re-enforced from behind with fiberglass. This needs to be extra strong to support the weight from people leaning on it.

The console frame is complete and is ready for fiberglass.

The armrest will be wrapped in T-shirt material and then re-enforced from behind with chopped fiberglass mat.

The main body of the consloe will be wrapped in fleece to give it enough strength with minimal re-enforcement. We won't be able to do it from behind on this piece.

We needed to add a few plugs for the fleece to retain the desired shape.

Armoredhaulin's 1992 GMC Topkick

Once the resin dried we decided that there were a few areas that we didn't like after looking it over.

The top section had a slight dip in it that didn't look right, so we built it up with a few extra layers of fiberglass mat.

We cut out the section of MDF behind the Farenheit EXCI-23 mounting area to allow for easier access for all the wiring that needs to be run.

The sides were a little different then we had hoped, so we cut them out and pieced in new sections to get the desired shape we were after.

Adding a little re-enforcement to get them nice & strong. We just added a few layers of fiberglass cloth on both sides...that's all that was required.

The new sections all cleaned up...this new shape was exactly what we were after to begin with. We had to take the extra time to make it correct.

The 2 sections can now be joined together to make 1 solid unit. We bridged the gap with a section of T-shirt material & a few pieces of painters tape to hold it in place while it was wet out with resin.

Now that the center console is 1 complete unit now, we added a few layers of chopped fiberglass mat on the sides to finish it off.

These are nice! I wonder what I can do with these???

Armoredhaulin's 1992 GMC Topkick

We needed to cut out a few mounting rings to mount the Soundstream emblems. These will be made from 1/8" MDF.

Small rings? Double stack 2 hole saws together...a little trick I came up with.

We cut out a round out of 1/4" MDF to serve as a backing piece for the emblems to attach to from behind.

This where they are going. We wanted to add a little something to break up the large side area & figured these would do the trick.

We attached them to the console with some resin paste that we mixed up with a little thixotropic powder.

Time to make it ready for sanding & bodywork by adding a final coat of waxed resin. We decided to dye the resin black so the entire unit would be 1 color. It is much easier to sand & fill when it is a ll the same color.
