espeery's 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO

1962 Ferrari GTO under restoration

I have always loved the Ferrari GTO.  Some years ago my father made a coupe replica based off the alpha kit.  I've taken up a similar project, but this time I wanted to make a few changes - LS1 six speed powerplant, convertable and a replica dash.  I've tried to note some of the major changes and achievements here.  A friend and I painstakingly hand-laid each and every fiberglass piece on this car.  The fiberglass dash I designed and made (available for purchase), custom engine brackets and a few other custom parts.  The project is atleast another year out or so.

Visit my official 1962 Ferrari GTO Recreation web page here:

The replica dash is my most recent project.  Here on the left is an original dash and the right is my design.  I had the help of some nice 3D CAD software to assist me.  I've since decided to change the heating vents from the three holes(shown) to a cutout on the top of the dash similar the on the one of the left.  The dash has a removable nacelle and faceplate, uses the original Datsun Z dash frame and grill and is all made of fiberglass.   The Datsun frame allows it to be bolted in very easily and it is very light weight.  I will paint it crikle coat black.  The gauge layout is the similar to the original as well.  I used a 5" speedo, but a smaller one may be preferable.  Let me know if you are intersted in purchasing a dash set.

The next item was to create a hood that is small, with similar frame structure and air vents.  Plexi hood vents will direct the air into the engine on the topside of the hood.  Here I've got it almost done.  I used square metal tubing for the frame and seamless round steel tubing for the hinges.  It is makes it for a very firm frame.  The hinge bolts a snug enough that the hood will stay up when resting 10 degrees off vertical - very nice not having to hold it up with a stick!

Espeery, I arrived at your site through the Hybrid z club. I am in the UK and am at the start of a GTO project. You have done some great work in getting detail right. Do you plan to sell the hood pins, plexiglass scoops or dash?

Espeery, I arrived at your site through the Hybrid z club. I am in the UK and am at the start of a rather long project. The first part is a 240Z based 250GTO but lengthened to get the proportions better. I share your concerns about oversize and badly shapen vents and plan to follow your route to correcting these but mine will be a berlinetta rather than a cabriolet. I also do not want to use the Datsun dash and although mine will be a righthand drive I would like to buy one of your dashes if you plan to make some spares. Similarly the plexiglass vents and hood pins would be of interest to me. Your progress inspires us all
