Custom Mirrors for Wrangler
_________________________________________________________________________________

I got bored one day with people who keep walking into my mirrors and then I have to readjust them manually. I was looking for another part at this scrappy, and I saw two BMW mirrors lying there. So I figured Ill offer the guy 50 bucks for them, took them home and started playing with them. I found out that not only do they fold away and adjust electronically they also dim and have heaters built in for fog and frost, not that I needed it for frost, but who cares it has it.

The first thing I did is make a cardboard mockup of how the aluminum fixture needs to look. I then cut out the aluminum and drilled the appropriate holes and took it to a friends shop to get it welded up. I then cut out the track on the stock mirror mount and had it welded in place on my new custom mounts. I then reassembled the mirrors and tested them. I now have mirrors which fit on a jeep, which folds, adjusts, dims and heats electronically. I still have a lot of fiber glass to do.

I took a mirror control switch from a Honda civic for free, and built a fiberglass box which wedges in-between the center console and driver seat. I then covered it with pleather and cut a hole and installed the mirror switch.

I started by wrapping the mirrors in plastic film and applied gypsum to make a model. Unfortunately after 3 tries it proved to be disastrous, it’s impossible to get the gyps smooth enough and it keeps on cracking. The other problem was the two mirrors weren’t identical.

My new strategy is to build the models out of balsa wood; I cut the right dimensions for each mirror. They will be identical, it can be smoothed and it won’t crack. I just have to finish the fiberglass work.

The final thing I still have to complete is the controller circuitry, I have built the following mockups, using a PIC16F84A microcontroller, which works well but is not finalized yet.
