wickedmotorhead's 1970 Chevrolet ChevelleHere's my wicked 70 Chevelle SS as it is right now. It started with a 396 which I blew the summer of 2002. So me and my friend Mark Dalquist just finished a nasty 454 which has around 600 hp, runs on pump gas, revs to 7000rpm, and will run in the low 11s in the 1/4 mile. I have all the updates as we built my new engine on all the other pages.

Well, I had a misfortune or "blessing" if you want to call it. I was jacking my car up with an aluminum jack that was no meant for this heavy car and it slipped off and dented my oil pan. OUCH!! This gave me the oppotunity to pull the engine and do some upgrades. Out with the engine...AGAIN.

I decided since I had to change the high capacity B&B oil pan that I would modify it the right way to clear the tie rods. You can see the mods I had to do below. This allows me to run the larger capacity oil pan. (Last time I use the BFH approach!)

While I had everything apart I decided to upgrade the steering with all new Moog parts and switch out the manual box with a new 600 steering gear and Type II power steering pump.

I had some cooling problems at idle so I also replaced the radiator with a Be Cool unit with dual Spal electric fans. I also changed the valve covers from the leaky stamped ones to the cast black powdercoated Chevrolet ones with billet breathers that I had powdercoated to match.

wickedmotorhead's 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle

wickedmotorhead's 1970 Chevrolet ChevelleI bought the car when I was 17 pretty much as its shown above. It had 60000 original miles on it. The flames were painted in 1976, but obviously it was well kept. A new 4" cowl hood was added to accomodate the new engine. I hope to have the entire car repainted soon, but the engine will keep me happy for quite some time. The interior is like brand new and the body is straight.

wickedmotorhead's 1970 Chevrolet ChevelleBelow are some pics of the interior, which is all stock (besides the tach, guages, and hurst shifter with line lock of course). Yes, that is a noose hanging from the rear view which acts as a simple warning specifically to rice burners.

Here's my new wicked Rat 468ci. Check out the other pages for the full build up of this sick powerplant.

wickedmotorhead's 1970 Chevrolet ChevelleWe just got back from the Car Craft Summer Nationals were we ran the car on the chassis dyno. The car is shown below on it with the dyno sheet. Take note that this is Rear Wheel horsepower and torque. Typically there is about 10-20% drivetrain loss. The test resulted in a maximum of 486.5 hp and 480.3 ft-lbs of torque (in 98 degree heat!), which is more than a Dodge Viper has at the motor! Therefore we are making about 600 hp at the flywheel as expected. The only real way to check accurate flywheel hp is with a timeslip since engine dynos are typically inaccurate.

wickedmotorhead's 1970 Chevrolet ChevelleCar Craft was so impressed that we drove the car 500 miles to get there and it runs on pump gas that he took a bunch of pictures and it made the December issue of the magazine on page 33 as a "Wild" proven combination, but they put the wrong picture in of someone elses car rrrrrrr! So my friend Mark (the engine builder) took it upon himself to put the right pictures with the Car Craft article shown to the left here. Cool write up though.
