billiard's 1994 Mitsubishi Diamante

billiard's 1994 Mitsubishi Diamante

Right now I am buttoning up my 6G74 engine swap. I started this project August 2006 when I pulled the original engine, the 6G72, to do a rebuild since the piston rings where bad. I got the engine completely rebuilt with an engine kit from Northern Auto and unfortunately had to move houses. The new house I moved to inevitably had no garage like my previous so I told the landlord Id be back to get my engine and car. I arrived and loaded my car onto the trailer and when I opened the garage all I saw was an empty garage, empty of my engine my engine crane and engine stand. I was hot and called the landlord repeatedly until I got ahold of him to hear that he had stored it at a friends house for me to pickup. I never hear from him again and long story short I lost my freshly rebuilt engine that was ready to be put back in. Now its 4 months later and I have my car at my girlfriends fathers garage. Without a plan on what to do the car sat there beside the garage from October to February. I finally decided I was going to buy another engine for it since I just cannot go without my baby. I found a good deal online for a used 6G72 from Osaka JDM for only $580 so I bought it for a total of $930 not too shabby I thought. When the engine arrived I was shocked to discover that they had sent me the wrong engine, they sent me a 6G74 from a JDM debonair which is a sweet deal since you cannot buy this engine for too much less than $1500. I got the engine in with a crane I borrowed from my uncle and so far everything is lining up and is going wonderfully. In an excitment provoked hurry I neglected to lube up the output shaft, big mistake I know. When I was tightening the trannsmission bellhousing to engine bolts the bellhousing broke off a pretty decent sized chunk taking three bolt holes with it. Luckily it broke in one clean piece. After this dilemma I ended up splitting up with my girlfriend and now must move the car once again. I brought it this time to my friends house which unfortunately happens to be about 40 minutes away from my house. With my work schedule I dont have too much time to drive there to work on it often. After being there for about two months I got my transmission removed, which is a pain using two jacks and jackstands holding the car, and had the piece welded back on. The next week I had the transmission back in the car. Today I got my new ball joints and tie rods installed. Tomorrow I am going to put the transmission cross member back in and hook the exhaust back up and finish the transmission by putting the four bolts in the torque converter. Tomorrow i will have it back on the ground. The only thing that will be left is to replace one coil pack, which I am waiting on the money for, and the valve cover gasket for precautionary measures and she will be complete. Since I have not heard of anyone in the US completely this swap I am not 100% sure if I need to replace the ECU or piggy back it or what not so if so then sadly I will be waiting longer to get my baby back since my job sucks at the moment. I would really like to know how many people in the world have completed a 6G74 swap in a first generation Diamante. As far as I know I am the first in the US, I believe there is one or a couple in Australia. Please any input would be appreciated. Ask any questions as well I am more than willing to share what i have learned.

Great job on doing this conversion! Perhaps this will be my next upgrade :) I've got so many questions... Did you use stock 6g72 ecu or some other custom ecu? Are the bellhousings the same? Was it neccesary to use custom made engine mounts, power steering pump mount and others like alternator etc. How is the transmission coping with increased torque? Anyway, it's nice to hear you finally managed to get the car going :)

Hey man how's the engine swap going for you? Are you doing a SOHC or DOHC engine swap?

Hey i saw you couldnt find a valve cover gasket for your 6g74. have them look up a 3000gt, the 6g72 has the exact same heads just different block.
