Fiberglass dash (2001) I started by scraping off the vinyl then I layed the fiberglass over the foam (several layers).
(2002) after a while of just sitting in my backyard I started sanding the dash and put some primer.
(03/03) Recently while painting some part for the Blazer (project Blaze) I took out the dash cleaned it off and sprayed it with some left over paint.
I cut off the whole center part out on the new dash to make room for the screen and the new location for the radio.
I made a wood frame that goes in the opening and a base/cover out of fiberglass for the top.
I fiberglassed the wood frame in place by wraping the cloth around the sides and reinforcing it from the back with more fiberglass.
The top part was made using 1/8" MDF for the front part (where gauges will mount) and one more for the back part. I hot glued the pieces on the fiberglass cover/base I made and then wrapped it all in cloth and put 2 layers of fiberglass. body filler to shape and mold the nice curves on top.
More body filler and lots of sanding with 80 grit to remove rough filler and 100 grit to shape it.
After sanding with 220 grit and 400 grit I primered the finished parts
Then I moved on to sanding the rest of the dash with a block to get it smoot and even using 100 grit then 220 to smooth it out. After it was even I layed some putty to cover any scratches and pin pinholes
I wet sanded the whole thing with 220 and 400 grit again.
(04/03) After I primered the whole thing I found some problem areas that were cracking because the fiberglass was too thin or had bubbles.... I went back and fixed all of them.
(05/03) I had to replace the heater core. while i had the dash out I decided to testfit the new dash and see if the radio would clear the vents.
Everything fits perfect and looks good... now it's time to paint the dash.
Painted using touch up paint from the local parts store.
Fiberglass kick panels Second set of kicks for my friends truck
Started new kick panels for Dino's truck (red 720)
I applied resin to the grill cloth. After it dried I added more coats of resin with pieces of fiberglass matt.... next step is to add another coat with the cloth and smooth it out.
(2005)
I started on my second fiberglass dash. Scrapped off all the vinyl to apply the fiberglass.
(02/2006)
Dash Update.
While I am still figuring out the wiring on the 720 I found some time to start on my new fiberglass dash (second dash).
(03/2006) Getting the shape with lightweight bondo.
