UPDATE: 9/14/07 Motor is in. I have it running again. Not a bad deal for 300.00. It didnt smoke tick or knock. I started decoding the motor late last night. The front suffix code tells me it a 79 350 Corvette motor. Only 225 HP. I will deal with that for now. The right cam, carb and intake will wake that motor up. The next major swap is the trans. I was supposed to get a 700R4 yesterday. Got to caught up with the motor swap. After I got the motor running...the coil went bad. It brand new...not even 400 miles on it. Good thing I had another one! I also put another 50.00 into it today. Got plugs and wires. Didnt get anything expensive. I had to get vacuum line connectors. I also got a carb stud for the air cleaner. Now we are up to almost 1700.00.

UPDATE 9/13/07 Well 700R4 trans didnt come in today. I got to 350 cleaned up. Gaskets replaced, and dropped into the car. I also replaced the timing chain. Since the motor was in a van...it had the 2 mile long oil dipstick. I replaced that too. We are up to a little over $1600.00 invested in this car. I guess that isnt bad. I dont mind doing the work. The 305 was a mess. The tops of the valves were white. I am sure the heads are shot. Julie took the car too work and said when she was driving it home it acted like it didnt want to run. Good thing I got the 350. There was 3 bolts in the trans bell housing. The harmonic balancer is a 350. That would explain why the motor shook too.

UPDATE: 9/12/07 I got a 350 4 bolt for her. Targetmaster motor. I will be putting it in tomorrow. I am supposed to pick up a 700R4 trans tomorrow. Pics will be up later.

UPDATE: 9/2/07 This morning took the car out to breakfast noticed a loud squeal coming from the right front. Sounds like the brake indicator is hitting the rotor. Brought it back and took it apart. Well I was right. Not only is the pads bad only on the right side but also the caliper is bad. $50.00 later and she has good brakes. Pics of this update is on page 5. What is next?

UPDATE: 8/22/07. Yesterday it got its 3rd tow home. The night before my girlfriend drove the car home from work. I went to start it up and put it in the garage and no power. Nothing. So I pushed it in. I found that the starter wires had gotten up against the headers. I really am beginning to believe that headers on a 3rd gen F body is a bad idea. I thought I had fixed the problem then it happened again with the main power wire down to the starter. So the car got towed back here. My girlfriend had to call into work and call off. The Sunday before this...the trans stopped shifting. It would manually shift but not auto shift. So i got it home and found out the vacuum line going down to the modulator valve was half rubber half plastic. Dont know who the brain child was on that. It got up against the header and melted. I replaced it with a metal 3/16ths line and rubber line at each end. I have been watching the voltage gauge on the dash go up and down. I knew the alternator was fixin the go out. So I replaced that...rebuilt the distributor...replaced the trans lines...tomorrow I am replacing the left front caliper. It pulls to the right sometimes.

UPDATE: 8/13/07 After decoding this car I have found out a few things about it. It came with a 2.8 V6 and its a Base Firebird. Someone has replaced a few things on it. The gauges and dash is out of a Trans Am. The nose and ground effects of a Trans Am too. Even further into this I have found out that the guy I bought it from lied about it all around. The motor is a 79 305 out of a Malibu. Casting Number 14016381. It over heated Saturday...thermostat stuck. Sunday the pick up coil in the distributor went bad. So far its been towed home twice in less than 24 hours. I took the distributor out of my truck for the time being. Installed a stereo yesterday...nothing fancy a Panasonic I had here. AM/FM/CD. I snagged the rear speakers out of my g/f's old car for the bird. I put the mirror back on the windshield..Julie dont like not having that mirror there. Out on the highway....at 70 she is running 4,000 RPMs. So will have to find a 700R4 for it soon. Future plans for it...I need to find a 350 for it...rebuild it. The carpet has to come up and Dynamat put under it to lessen the noise and heat. The headers seem to be putting off alot of heat. I need to replace the head liner. In typical GM fashion...its hanging down. I stapled it up for the moment. I found out also the reason why the guy quit driving the car...the stereo he had in there quit working....so he stopped driving it because of that. What a moron. I will give more updates as I go.

UPDATE: 8/23/07 I found out while under the car...as every other 305...it has a cracked flywheel. The rearend gears need to be changed. Since it has a 2.8 V6 in it and a 700R4 the rearend gears are very low. 70 MPH = 4000 RPM. The one thing they did good...the did get the trans out of a 82 - 83 F body.

8/9/07 I was really surprised with the car. It looks good...it runs good. I am going to replace the air for her. I havent looked up anything else about it yet. I am going to replace that 2 BBL carb and intake with a Edelbrock intake and carb. Posi rearend. Shift kit and converter. Has a set of Hooker Super Comps on it too.

Dont know where they got this idea at. The motor isnt a 350 Pontiac...or even a 350 Chevy UPDATE: Its a 350 Chevy now!
