grant-mundy's 1971 MG Midget

This is my little MG, I got her on the 2nd of February 2003 I was told she needed a little bit of work for an MOT to get her rod Legal again,

they lied...

This is what the car was Like when I got her (Below) ,she is structurally solid since she was restored in 1997/1998I thought if I have a look at the brakes, suspension, Lights etc then she will be back on the road ready for the summer of 2003!
I tried to get her for an MOT check at a friends garage but then the clutch went, the car then sat around for years until I Finally did something with her, this was the first time She had been out of the garage and she started FIRST TIME !(this was last year)

In March this year I finally got it to my friends garage for an MOT check to have all the work done and then MOT'd at the end, the car looked pretty good with a polish and a clean...

I got a phone call after he had the car for four days, he called and said there was a big problem, he had done all points, leads, condensors etc and tued the car again, he left it running for 20 mins and the oil came out the front bottom pulley seal, he said the only way was to take the engine out, which was more than the car is worth, so he just brought it back to me.
grant-mundy's 1971 MG Midget with the new hardtop looks pretty good.
I got the car back and the Dynamo was squeaking BADLY!
So that was next, so onto ebay and I bought a grant-mundy's 1971 MG Midget recon for about £30 and that went in reasonably easily...
While I was messing with that I started to look at the front grill, my old one was cut and bent and generally pretty worn out so I went and got the mesh stuff to put in instead... not to bad.grant-mundy's 1971 MG Midget But that wasnt what I was looking for. I am really interested in the large bumpers and the chrome grll like on the older ones like this one ( found on Google)

I eventually had to look at the engine when white smoke was coming out, can't be good...
The car kept pouring out white smoke sitting idle and would not actually'lose power' when I turned the key ( engine just turned back on itself!)
Obviously it was the cylinder head, so that was next on the list of todo.
The next week I pulled off the cylinder head, i found the head gasket had gone around the third piston, this also linked in with all of the damage all over the top of the piston and the damaged valves in the head on cylinder 3!grant-mundy's 1971 MG Midget grant-mundy's 1971 MG Midget
The easiest solution was just to swap engines after having all of this hassle and grief, so that was next!
I eventually found an engine on Piston Heads from a guy named Oliver Wild, he also had a gearbox aswell and the car it came out of had only done about 1000 miles in the car before rotting out.
That came down from yorkshire and out came the old motor, this was the first time i had ever taken an engine out of a car so I didnt even know if I would get one back in!
I decided to also strip off everything around the front to look at all prone midget rust areas. but as I thought they were all solid

Almost out! ...well starting to get there.....................................Out it comes!
I decided to seperate it first before trying to remove it, i realised how much harder I made my life by doing that!, eventually however I had both out and I finally could start seeing if there was anything wrong with the engine bay, luckily a bit of surface rust(protected proabably from the oil leak on the engine)
grant-mundy's 1971 MG Midget grant-mundy's 1971 MG Midget
And then there were 2!, the old and the new!
While there was no engine I thought I might aswell tackle what little bodywork issues there was, so just a little bit of surface rust here and there, I atacked the inner wings first, then moved on to the Left hand sill, all the floors were still the original blue colour from when it was rebuilt and it is still thickly coated in waxoyl so will leave that for now, you can see in some of the pictures higher up that there is actually primer on the wings and on part of the outer footewll skin, that was the magic Kurust, useful stuff, rubbed all the rust off of the bodywork and sprayed with the kurust protection, another problem I had from my firend the Mechanic man was that the steering rack kept clicking and had a bit of play in the rack, easiest decision, get a good one!, so off came the rack and the brackets and I sourced a good rack off of Max Tyler(Amazingly brilliant with anything to do with midgets, if you ever need anything midget wise I am sure he will have it or be able to get it for you!), so I cleaned up the brackets at school with a sand blaster, got the new rack, painted it black, gave it some ends, put it on the car, bolted it in and gave it another rough coat of black for protection, doesnt look to bad and hopefully protected!

Hi all, thought I would keep you posted for anyone interested! Going back to bare metal, all the rubbish material is being removed, then the body is getting resprayed, probably British Racing Green or dark blue! the interior is going to be redone in cream leather with biscuit carpets and magnolia trim panels. The engine already race tuned is going to have a decompression plate fitted to bring the capacity out to 1322(9mm plate +additional head gasket which adds around 3cc)then I am going to fit the supercharger from the new mini cooper s (Eaton m45) I am also going to fit a ford type 9 type gearbox with a shortened remote so that there is not any internal appearence modifications!! These will take time so i will try to keep you posted!!
