mattsterRX7's 1992 Mazda MX-3

This is my new 1986 Mazda RX-7 GXL. The car has a white exterior, maroon/burgundy interior, PW, PD, sunroof, AC, "auto adjusting suspension", duel exhaust, etc. The engine is a 1.3L N/A rotary engine which puts out around 146 HP. If you don't know how a rotary engine works, I suggest checking this link out => http://auto.howstuffworks.com/rotary-engine.htm.

I spotted the ad locally, and the owner only asking $500 for it because it didn't start. I thought I knew enough about rotaries to assume that the apex seals were probably toast. However, this was no problem for me because my *origional* intentions were to swap a Chevy 350 LT1 or Ford 302. The owner lived 1 hour south of my home in Lynden, WA so i made the trip after work one day to check out the car. When I pulled up to the driveway, I immediately learned that the owner was an absolute rotary genious... I put 2 and 2 together when I found 2 RX-7's in his driveway, 10 rotary pickups in his garage, about a dozen engines laying around, and a million housings and rotors laying around. I told him right away that I knew that I was in trouble considering even HE thought that this car was worth selling ;). But the dude soon conviced me that he only worked with carburated models, and that he just couldn't get the car running. He even went as far as to say that it would run on starter fluid... but he just couldn't the fuel injection figured out. I figured he was BSing me, but I really didn't care about the condition of the engine at the time. The guy even threw in an older rotor and housing to put in my dorm room come fall. Anyway, I gave him the $500 and strapped the RX on a dolly and dragged it home. The next day I popped the hood, and just for kicks tried some simple trouble shooting. Sure enough... there was spark and ignition, 2/3 essential elements to run. So i figured id just spend the day and see if I could figure out where the fuel was getting hung up. To make a long story short, after an hour or so of following the fuel lines from the tank, I noticed a simple fuel line mixup. It turns out the line with the fuel pressure led to the fuel return regulator and the line without the pressure led to the injectors. It was a shot in the dark, but definately worth the 2 minutes to switch them up. I turned the ignition to ON, heard that powerful RX-7 fuel pump buzz, and then turned it over. two revs and a pump of the pedal and the rotors started doing their thing. it burned oil like none other for about 20 minutes of driving (almost embarassing... but i was so pumped) then the smoke stopped pouring out. It's now running great now that all the little quirks have been worked out. I'm going to sell it as soon as I get it re-titled and then hopefully buy another to continue my V8 swap.
