This is my white diamond 1990 Cadillac STS. I bought this car from the original owner in 2005. It was always garaged. 1990 was the first official year of the STS, but it was not the first year the STS name appeared, that happened in 1988. In 1990 however, the STS received its own special vin code (Y), which made it an actual model, rather than just a dress up package.
The package consisted appearance enhancements as well as mechanical. Cadillac tried to give the STS a sleek look by removing the hood emblem and front light indicators, along with the thick chrome side mouldings. Due to poor marketing, Cadillac only sold 1,893 STS cars in 1990. Base price for the STS was $36,320, even more than a Corvette! Included with the STS option were the following:
Beechwood ultra-soft leather interior, with elm burl wood accents hand-finished at Behr of W. Germany
Rear console
Bucket style rear seats
White diamond 3-stage exterior color
Ground effects in body color on rockers and rear
European style tail-lamps
Cloisonne trunk lock emblem
Trunk lid liner
STS trunk lid emblem
STS wheel center caps
STS embroidered floormats
Distinctive crest and wreath on grille
Theft-deterrent system
Dual outlet exhausts
Teves 4 wheel Anti-lock brake system
Performance 3.33:1 effective final drive ratio
Performance 15.6:1 steering ratio
Touring suspension with beefed up front and rear sway bars
In 1991, Cadillac decided to take the console out of the rear seat bringing the car from a 4 seater to 5. 1991 was the last year of this unique body style.
This car has been great to me the three years I have owned it. It always starts, even in -20 degree weather, and I have never had any coolant issues or electrical problems. I hope to eventually put on some chrome the rims, lower it a little, and experiment with installing a Getrag 284 5 speed!
