Well, I really did not like the lack of bass that these cars have. There is not any opening to the trunk for the rear speakers, they sit in metal bowls. I had found out about a great bass producing system at 5er Fest 2002. The Coustic Basspump speaker system. The one I purchased is the 8" duel speaker Basspump. Well, the bass is just great now. I have a 350-watt Kenwood amp driving the basspump. Additionally in back I have the BMW premium sound speakers. They have a 5" midrange and 2" tweeter. Up front, I have the BMW 2" tweeters mounted in the doors and 6.5" coax Blaupunkt in the kick panels.
Here are a couple shots of the amp board in the trunk. The two 80 X 2 watt Coustic amps power the front and rear speakers. The center amp is only for the basspump. Have a MTX crossover and capacitor to take care of any power surges.
Some pictures of the speakers, power line from battery and radio.

Here is the head unit. The Blaupunkt Travelpilot DX-R70. Works like charm to keep me from getting lost in Germany. Even has a nice women who gives me verbal directions. This with a Blau MP3 player in the glove box and I am set.

Now all of this is protected by multiple fuses. Main power line has an 80 amp fuse, each amp has it own fuse and all of the powered components in the trunk have another separate fuse. You can not be too careful when it comes to a fire.
UPDATE, DEC 2006
With the install of the Alpina Aux fuel tank, I had to move all of the stereo components in the trunk.
Here are some pictures of the solution -
