This is our next project. It is a 68 SS427 sport coupe with the original 425HP 427 and M21 close ratio transmission. Although the car is complete, it has a lot of rot because it sat in poor conditions for over two decades. This car is very interesting, as it appears it was ordered strictly to go fast. It has no buckets or console, just a bench seat plain jane Impala interior . The only real way to tell it is anything other than a normal Impala by the interior is by the Muncie stamped 4 speed lever sticking out of the floor. The only options it has aside from the high performance engine trans and rear axle are tach and gauge dash, and headrests. It doesn't even have a radio! If that wasn't enough, the original owner also ordered from the Chevy dealer a cowl induction air cleaner setup. This kit required cutting a hole in the firewall for a fiberglass duct to be attached to. The duct ran into the air cleaner body. At high speeds, there is very high air pressure at the base of the windshield, so this setup acted like Ram-Air by forcing cold air through the duct and into the engine. There were only 568 425HP 427 engines installed in fullsize Chevrolets in 1968, and I have record of less then 15 equ ipped cars left, 5 of which are SS427s
These are the factory bench seat head restraints used in 1968 onl y. They are pretty funky looking, but also really cool. Also seen here is the tach. L72 equipped cars had a 6000 RPM redline.
