When I'm sick of cruising the streets in the Stang and just want to kick up some dust, I hop into this beast! I can do burnouts and rip it up without having to worry about anyone telling me what to do on 35 acres of private property. :)
This is a Wolkswagon Sandrail. It has the frame of a Beetle. I don't know the exact year of it, but I believe it is 1970's?
It was purchased in January 2006, and boy was in need of major work. It was rusty/yellow and would not start, so I figured, what a great project!
The engine was rebuilt and the frame was fully powdercoated bright yellow. Black foam padding was added around the entrance of the vehicle on each side, so no-one kills themself getting in. (It's a very tight fit)
The steering wheel was originally located underneath a bar on the "dash area", I guess you could call it. However there really is no dash; just the ignition. But it was such a tight fit from the bottom of the steering wheel to my thigh that I could barely move. I had the steering wheel re-located on top of the bar, and what a difference! It added a lot of clearance, so it is now more enjoyable to drive.
It has fiberglass seats that I painted flat black, and I also painted the floor black with the paint-on protective liner used to line the bed of trucks. The seats have full racing harnesses installed on them.
I have painted some of the pulleys blue on the back to accent the blue racing harnesses. A chrome air cleaner was added on top.
This thing is a blast to drive, although it only has 2 gears! I still can't believe it only has 2 gears, but I am looking into finding a 4 speed transmission that will fit, and also a Judson turbocharger somewhere in the near future.
