MY GLHS LOVE AFFAIR
My GLHS love affair began when I was in high school. At first, I was in love with the less potent GLH Turbo. The first time I saw a GLH-T, I was on Van Dyke and 6 Mile Rd on the Eastside of Detroit. My mother was driving me to school (I was 14) and a gold and black GLH-T took off from the light like a bat outta hell! WOW... I was immediately smitten.
Flash forward a few years... the first time I saw a GLHS was sitting at a red light at 8 Mile Rd and Livernois. Some guy in a 10 gallon cowboy hat pulled up in a GLHS and made the right turn going east on 8 Mile. I begged my buddy to keep up so I could ge a better look, but his 1985 Chevy Nova/Toyota Corolla could not keep pace. It was at that moment that I fell in love and vowed to one day own a GLHS Omni!
Flash forward a few more years to 2000. I had recently taken out an add on yahoo to sell a 1992 Mercury Cougar (go ahead and laugh, but it was actually a fun car to drive). The add hadn't generated a single phone call so I logged on to yahoo to take it down. On a whim, I typed G-L-H-S into the search field and *POP*... there was #003 for sale in California! I called the number and the deal was made. I flew to LA a few weeks later to buy it and drive it home to Detroit.
SOME HISTORY ABOUT #003
This is my 1986 GLHS. It is #003 of 500. Instant collectable and completely refurbished. I am the second owner. The car was originally owned by Linda Kolinski (formerly Hanneman) of Whittier, CA. Linda's ex (Neil) used to work as an engineer for Carrol Shelby back in the 80's and was one of the first people to buy a new GLHS back in 86 (hence the low #). Linda drove the car for 14 years as her daily commuter putting approximately 120,000 miles on the odometer. When I bought the car in December 2000, it was in excellent mechanical condition but was showing its age in the paint, plastic trim, interior trim, etc. Linda agreed to sell me the car because I promised not to part it out.
I never met Neil but a few years ago, he was woking for Ford (on the Ford GT) in the Detroit area. We tried to meet for lunch a few times without any luck. I was hoping to get some more history of the car.
WHAT HAPPENED TO #002
I have read in several places that Carrol Shelby himself owns #001, but who owns #002? By some accounts, Carrol wrecked #001 back in the day and used parts from #002 to fix his own car. I am not sure if that's fact or fiction, but if it is true, I assume that #002 is no longer in existence. That means that other than Carrol's car, mine has the lowest serial number of all 86 GLHS's. Although that's worth bragging about... I don't want to brag aout something that I can't verify. Does anyone out there know what really happened to #002? Do YOU own it? Inquiring minds want to know.
MODIFICATIONS:
I didn't want to make many mods to the car since I really appreciate what Dodge and Shelby engineers did with it originally. The (short) list of mods is as follows:
- Mopar Performace Computer
- custom exhaust system (yeah, I even kept the catalytic converter on it)
- custom aftermarket stereo*
* I must state here that even I think the SAS Bazooka subwoofer/faux NOS bottle I used is cheeeeeezy (you'll see what I'm talking about in the interior photos). It was a decision based on cost and limited packaginig space. I am hoping to redo the stereo this winter.
ON THE OUTSIDE
Exterior photos were taken at my (old) home a few years ago. Since then, I have had the engine and transmission rebuilt so the car has seen very little road action. My God is it hard to find NOS parts for these cars. Car looks just as good in 2008.
