mrmopardan's 1968 Plymouth GTXmrmopardan's 1968 Plymouth GTX

I purchased this car in 1984. The car was being raced at the time. The body was in fairly good condition but the interior was shot.

The GTX was my favorite model as a teenager back in 1968. I could never afford one back then since the car cost about $3,500.00!! I watched these Mopars kick a lot of tail back in the late 60's & early 70's. These old Mopar Muscle cars had pure brutal horse power.

In 1985 I did a partial restoration. fresh paint & interior, converted The 440/727 Auto. to a 6 pack & installed a 125 shot of NOS as well as installing 3:91 gears in the 8 3/4" rear. I kept the car as such for the next 17 yrs. going to car shows & cruising.

In 2002 I joined a car club called the "The Big Easy Mopar Association", which is a great car club. I now have a network of friends that share information on parts & mods. & more importantly...we share the Mopar Fellowship. Our weekend cruises are the most fun, I can never get enough of it.

In 2005 my friend & club member Howard, did a .030 overhaul of the 440. Some of the upgrades are: A Mopar Purple shaft .509 Hyd. cam, Edlebrock alum. unported RPM heads (10.54 comp), TRW alum.6 pack pistons, "LY" connecting rods, TTI 1 7/8" headers, custom 5 core radiator, 2400 Turbo Action stall & auto/manual valve body. The dyno did not work correctly on the day of the dyno test, so I can only estimate my HP against my 1/4 mile speed & E.T. which calculates to around 475-500 H.P.

I made a single pass @ the drag strip in Mar. 07 netting a 12.576 @ 109.19 MPH. on drag radials & motor only, no nitrous. That was thru very restrictive 2" reducers in the exhaust. I have since install a full TTI 3" exhaust. I will post the new times later when I get back to the strip. I hope for a low 12 sec. pass, maybe even 11's with more gear!!

Update 1-8-09... Been awhile since I updated this page. I installed a Dynamic 9.5 in convertor last summer. My last time at the track netted a 12.23 @ 111 mph. Need to practice my launch & do some more tuning.

Update 6-26-09.. Made the Rich Christensen Arm Drop event in Dec. 08. Car ran 12.232 & 111 mph. Noted the trans was slipping considerably. Rebuilt the trans in Jan. 08 & modified it for even more performance. The upgrade paid off...  Entered the "Pinks All Out" in Feb 09. in good air & the car ran 12.046 @ 113 mph. Hope to do some more tuning & finally get this big girl in the 11's this fall.

very nice GTX...definitly deserves 5*s...seeing your GTX brought back childhood memories of a '68 roadrunner that a mechanic owned down at the end of my street...it was purple with two wide racing stripes,no vinal top,but top painted black, had the six pack hood centerline wheels, cooper cobra tires and he had a early dual quad hemi in it...the valve covers said "chrysler fire power" on them,he used to do smokey burnouts at the end of the block with it,and I think he ran 11.60s with it...I never knew his name, because I was a shy child, but I sure did idolize this man...and even though I am not him yet...maybe some time soon, when I tackle a muscle car,or hot rod project!
