I bought this Olds Cutlass Holiday Coupe from a guy off of eBay for $1,000 and flew down to Texas with my son to pick it up. It was our father and son project. You hear about a lot of father and son car projects that don't get done but we actually pulled it off. My son even got his senior pictures taken with the car when it was done! We drove the Cutlass home to Minnesota with no radio, a leaking brake line, poor tires and had spare parts filling the back seat and trunk. Quite stupid really but you're not sure of a leaking brake line until you run out of fluid.
Fortunately, we were at a hotel and I was backing out of a parking space in the hotel parking lot and had plenty of space and time to let it roll to a stop.
When I was in college, my 77 Cordoba got backed into and a buddy of mine and I filled the grill opening with teeth and a tongue. Seeing that this car also had a busted grill, I couldn't help but tell my son about the Cordoba and as soon as we got home, he was all over me to put teeth and a tongue in the grill opening.
With that done, I replaced the dented driver's door and figured I would let him have some fun with the damaged car door. Boy did he do some damage.
The car's suspension, drive train, brakes, exhaust and interior were completely redone. The engine was an anemic 350 with compression of less than 100 psi in each cylinder and the transmission was original but it was drivable and he couldn't really tear up the tires or get a ticket for being a teenager in a muscle car no matter how stupid he acted.
Since he graduated almost two years ago, the Cutlass now has a healthy rebuilt Olds 455 bored 30 over with a rv cam and a compression ratio of about 9.5:1. My son rebuilt it with a little bit of instruction from me (and of course my money) and installed himself. The turbo 350 transmission is about to be replaced with a turbo 400. Pictures and more to be posted later.
