Old Car - New Performance 1983 Mazda Rx-7 Runs 1:23's as Summit Point! It was purchased as your typical SCCA ITA car but through various opportunities of carnage it has been constantly upgraded to overcome its weaknesses and to my own likes despite class rules.
The front end has been cut off due to a dark and rainy impact at Summit Point. The new front end is tubular and wrapped with a fiberglass single piece body. The huge oil cooler and moderately sized radiator are ducted and exit out of the hood for efficiency. The giant splitter helps with high speed balance. Out back is your typical NASCAR style spoiler which will eventually be replaced with a wing to reduce drag.
I have stuck with 13" wheels and have elected to use 10" wide cantilever slicks for maximum traction. The small diameter is an advantage with it comes to rotating inertia. I have stuffed 11.1" slotted rotors inside of them with quick change Willwood calipers. It stops pretty darn quick considering the car only weights 1950 lbs with me in it!
The motor is a naturally aspirated 12a with dual Webers and 3 MSD's. If you?re not a rotary guy I can't explain it here. The tranny has Miata guts and works through a Tilton 7.25" clutch. In the rear is a reliable Mazda LSD running through a 5.12 gear reduction.
The car is fast and I rarely come across another vehicle that is as quick in a corner. It?s a loose pig at times and you have to be on top of it to be fast but it is rewarding when you are!
