The first time I heard a Flowmaster Exhaust System I new I'd have to get one for "OBEASTY". And when I discovered that Flowmaster makes mufflers for the 85 Corvette, that have a 2.5" inlet and two 2" outlets, I started planning for what you see here.
To say that this exhaust system changed "OBEASTY's" personality for the better would be a gross understatement. And as you can see it's very straight forward and quite simple, but with a little something extra..."Four 17" Megs Megaphones".
Here you can also see how well the 71 Polara 8 3/4 ( C Body ) 3:23 Rear Axle fits in a 46 to 48 Dodge Chassis. We used the stock Shock Mounts, 1.5" x 2" Tubing for lowering blocks and moved the Pads to match the Spring width. "OBEASTY" wears BFG 215/65/15 (front) 275/60/15 (rear) on 15"x7" Mopar Cop Wheels with a 4.25" offset, Cop Hub Caps and 2" deep Stainless Steel Beauty Rings. Eventually I may get a pair of "custom" 15"x8" Cop Wheels, with a 5.25" offset, for the rear because the 8" width is a better fit for the 275/60/15 rear tires.
In order to make this all work the stock gas tank, which hung down 9" below the trunk floor, had to be replaced so there would be clearance for the four 2" exhaust pipes.
After quite a bit of hunting I finally found the right gas tank in a Jeep Cherokee. To mount it we cut a hole in the trunk floor for the bottom 4" of the tank to hang though. In the process the spare tire well was done away with and filled in. One day soon I'm going to build a plywood cover to hide and protect it.
A Jeep Cherokee Gas tank holds 20 gallons and it's fill and vent spouts are in exactly the right location so they can be connected to the stock 48 Dodge gas spout on the left rear fender.
November 16th 2007 Something you need to be aware of if you're going to try this in your Mopar. Jeep Cherokees from 1982 to 1986 (with a 20 Gallon Fuel Tank) used a Mechanical Fuel Pump on the Engine. The problem is that although you can buy a brand new 82-86 20 Gallon Tank ...you will not be able to find a new Fuel Level Sending Unit for it. I speak from experience here...after an exhaustive search... I came to find out that nobody...and I mean nobody makes Fuel Level Sending Units for the 82-86 Jeep Cherokee 20 Gallon Tank "any more". Prove me wrong on this if you can ...but I sure couldn't find one. In 1987 Jeep Cherokees started using Fuel Injection and an Electric Fuel Pump mounted in the Fuel Tank. We are using one of these Fuel Injection Tanks. In order to use the Electric Fuel Pump in our tank we'd need to set up a Bypass Fuel Regulator and a Return Fuel Line back to the tank. This would work with either a Carburetor or Fuel Injection. We've decided however to go "old school" and use the Mechanical Fuel Pump on the engine. To make this work we pulled the Sending Unit out of the Fuel tank and replaced the Elecrtric Fuel Pump with a length of Rubber 3/8" Fuel Line, and installed a Fuel Filter within a few inches of the Fuel Spout on the Sending Unit. This works very well and keeps things very simple. One last little tip...make sure you get a Fuel Gauge that's made to work with a "GM Sending Unit"...otherwise your Fuel Gauge will read backwards. Been there ...done that.
"OBEASTY" will be making "sweet music" again. And yes she does sound awesome...extremely awesome
