INTERIOR AND AUDIO
Many people feel that they need enough audio equipment in their cars to overpower most people's home entertainment systems before they can respectfully post up about their setups. That's ridiculous. Bleeding ears, screaming children, and general devastation ensue when owners get caught up in loudness over quality.
I talk big, but I really don't understand enough about SPL and dB competitions to really have anything of value to add, but it is also because I don't understand (or care to understand) the world of extreme car audio that I can appreciate the quality sound system the Touring FDs came with.
Enter Bose.
Mazda Miata Bose CD Player, $40. The stock Bose system in the RX-7 is a stacked double-din affair, the CD player running as an auxiliary to the tape player and radio receiver. As it was, the night illumination behind the LCD displays was non-functional. Given these circumstances and the abundance of cheap, OEM alternatives, I bought this head unit on eBay for $40. Installation was a breeze. I did need to fabricate an adapter harness for it, but other than that, it was a piece of cake. Purchased, installed.
Incidentally, an added benefit that comes with updating the audio hardware is the newer AuxMod Basic hardware that I bought. This is a chip that interfaces with the tape/MD add-on that provides me an AUX input for an iPod or other music device. I run the 1/8in plug through the center console and hide it in the ashtray. When/if I get an armrest installed, I'll be able to hide the iPod in there as well.
Replacement Door Speakers, $50. It's hard to wrap my head around it, but after seeing the quality of the Bose hardware and the complexity of the stock Bose enclosures, it's clear that these little speakers are capable of producing a LOT of sound. The one in the driver's side door seems to have blown, so here's an easy fix. Installed.
