I got this for a few hundred $$ from a junk yard, there were gonna save the t-tops and scrap the rest.
The performance numbers listed are estimates from calculators or similar cars.
So far I have painted it WR blue, put in a 5 speed D/R trans and little stereo system. Other than that I drive it 110 miles a day and it just keeps going. Gets about 28-33MPG depending on the temperature and how its feeling. A FI conversion would give me more consistent MPG and could bump the HP up 1 or 2.
Long term, probably will re-drill the hubs for 6 bolt wheels to be able to find some(any)decent wheels or do a 5 bolt swap. I also will do a fuel injection conversion, probably with parts from the 85-94 style Loyal Subarus. I also would like an EJ motor & trans swap long term or if this motor or trans ever blows up. But for now the little EA81 keeps running.
Here is what I started with:
It kind of ran when I got it, the valves adjustment screws were loose so it had lots of valve noise, no ignition switch, just wrap the wires together, carb had a bad spring so it would sometime idle at 3000rpm. Someone had changed the converter but did a bad welding job so it was kind of noisy, that took about 3 minutes to weld up again. Then it had no headlights, no parking lights in front, and other wiring problems that wernt to bad to fix. It had a bad oil pump gasket, so it leaked alot up front and had lifter noise come sometime from the oil being aerated.
First I put on another bezel & marker light so I could at least drive it round.
When I got it there was no key. Just connect the 2 wires together to turn it on, then tap the other wire for the starter.
Now was time to start cleaning it up. Every panel had several dents. Easiest way to fix it was bolt on everything that could be changed.
I got a new fender, primered it then spray painted it since the sealer I used wasnt meant to be exposed for a long time.
(picture coming)
Then put on 2 doors and I got a good start. Im looking for the right fender still, the one thats on there is fixable but its faster to just changed it.
I have have the engine running very well, better than new maybe. Most all the emissions have been removed, I have put in a smaller jet(110) in the primary side of the carb and a larger(150) in the secondary. Runs excellent, none of the typical old subaru hesitation and averages 33mpg, or about 2 better than with everything hooked up.
Here it is after bolting on a new aftermarket fender and good used door.
Here it is after I started the body work. Both sides of the bed were dented, the passenger side was alot worse.
Now its all sanded its ready for some sealer than to be painted.
Now some of this:
Gets you this:
Here it is mostly put together and painted. Need some trim clips and stuff but is about how it will look. Im also gonna get a better tailgate to put on later.
Paint isnt perfect but the more I worked on it the less picky I got, it was a junk yard car and Im not restoring it, Im painting it. I also ran out of sealer, thought I had a can and a half but just had half a can, so I couldnt do a good heavy coat of sealer to hide some imperfections. I may repaint the hood because and right quarter one day, maybe not. You can see some scratches or pinholes under the paint there but that will be easy to do anytime.
Add some 35% tint (I like to be able to see at night) and your done. Still need some trim strips.
