This is a 1989 Mercury Colony Park station wagon that our highschool class shortened 22 inches to create the " Dragin Wagon " for our Iowa State Technology Expo two years ago. The project began with a pair of donated 32 x 14.5 wrinklewall slicks which were mated to homemade 13.5 wheels. The original Turbine mags and a pair of Lincoln mags were heli-arced together after removing the corresponding bead surfaces on a brake lathe and truing them up on a wheel balancer before welding. This set the tone for the car, a Hot Wheels style drag racer. The entire car was constructed for $ 536 (230 cash and the rest in donations) and ten of my students won $ 1000 scholarships for our 1st place finish in the group project catagory. It has a 88 Cougar 5.0 HO with donated Mustang shortie headers coupled to the original dual exhausts, sans mufflers, with short glasspack blanks in the rear. Valve covers are 60's Micky Thompsons found in my attic and polished by the students as was the stock intake manifold. The rear end is a 3:83 limited slip, also original equipment, and the AOD has now been rebuilt with modifications by a local shop after destroying three used transmissions during burnouts with the slicks. The back seat area was turned into speaker boxes and donated 6X9's were installed with 6" round speakers in the rear and front along with a donated CD radio from my daughter. The red dragon seat covers were donated by a student's mother for some work done to her car. Local retail outlets provided carpet, dragon license frames and dragon floormats. Guages have also been added to the dash and 8-way 88 Cougar power seats installed. Truck bed liner is our trademark finish since we no longer have the ability to safely spray paint and it is magnificient at hiding beginning student's bodywork.
