When I first bought my Wrangler, I hadn't seen one with a system before and I thought "Why not?" I also figured that it would be a really good way to get a little bit of attention around town. Not too many people expect to hear a little bit of "thump" from a Wrangler.(Espially one without a top) So I did the only thing I could think of, build it!
As you can see, I went "no holds barred" with this one. If a rig is going to have a stereo set up in it, you might as well make it look good too. I still have a few more things to do to it still so look for more pictures in time soon to come. And, YES, I do indeed take this one off road quite a bit.
When I decided to build a set up in my Wrangler, I had researched it a little. I found that a "down fire" sealed box works great! It sends the bass into the body of the Jeep and travels quite well. It also helps when the top is off so that your subs aren't depending on the interior of your car to hold the bass. I also wanted to make sure to create a design that would be able to hold a couple of passengers in the back without making them uncomfortable. The backrest doubles as a storage for tools and has an area to hold my 2 amps.
If you are wondering what I have installed into such a small truck, I have 2 JBL GT Power series 12" subs in a sealed "down-fire" box. They are being drive by a Majestic "Titanium" 300 watt amp. I have a pair of "Infiniti" 3-way 6X9" mids, and a pair of "Clarion" 4X6" 2-way plate speakers in the dash to give me all of my mid and high ends. Those are only being driven by a Kenwood CD head unit. I am looking into possibly taking out the subs and amp to make room for an up-grade I have been drawing out on a little piece of paper. I designed the entire thing myself and did the install too. I am hoping that the next one turns out a little better for appearance. This picture was taken at the "Car Stereo Olympics" at the Bellevue Magnolia Hi-Fi. I ran it through the SPL testing twice just for kicks, since I didn't have the top on the Jeep. On my first run, I got a 128.9 . Without making any adjustments(except to change discs) I went through a second time and got a 139.3 ! Not bad for a Jeep without a top!! I was able to talk with quite a few people there and recieved a lot of compliments. I was really hoping to hit the 140.0 mark, but without a top, that is a real challenge. But there is always next time. If you would like to see it in person, I will be at the Magnolia Hi-Fi in Southcenter WA on July 23&24, for another day of fun at the Car Stereo Olympics. I hope to see a few more people there. If you think you got it, then why dont you flaunt it??
