How-To Install Clear LED Brake Light
***************First off you need to buy the Clear Spoiler LED bar from HERE***************
BEFORE----------------------------------------------------------->AFTER
(above pic does not show all tools I used)
Tools needed:
-Rotozip or Dremel
-Phillips Drill Bit
-Vise Grips
-Wire Taps or Solder Gun
-Wire Cutters
-Silicone Sealant (I bought mine from Home Depot)
-Long Phillips Drill Bit (at least 6in. long)
-Drill Gun
-Some Towels or Rags
-This is how Clear LED bar looks when it arrives.
1) Get Rotozip or Dremel & shave middle two tabs off. It should look like above pics when your done.
2) Now unscrew the 2 most outer screws on the OEM spoiler light. To do it without removing spoiler. I tighten a Phillips Drill Bit w/ vise grips & that gave me clearance to
unscrew the screws no problem. Be sure to lay some Towels or Rags underneath to be sure that you don’t scratch up trunk.
3) Now disconnect OEM brake light.
4) Now you need to make a hole where I circled in above pic. Use a Rotozip or a Dremel to make the hole. This hole is needed so the wires from the back of the Clear LED Brake Light can run into.
5) Now feed the wires of the Clear LED Brake Light through the hole that you made. Now you can Wire Tap or Solder the wires together.
6) Now cut OEM wire right around this area so you can either Wire Tap or Solder wires together. Either way make sure before you make it permanent you connect wires temporary & have someone tap the brakes so you make sure you are connecting the right wires with each other & it works.
(P.S. I was going to solder wires but my solder gun didn’t work so I wire tapped the wires & as you can see no problem w/ clearance in sticking wire taps back in hole)
7) Now to be safe you can close up holes with the silicone sealant. I also smeared silicone sealant on bottom of Clear LED Bar so it would stick to OEM spoiler.
8) Now to hold Clear LED Bar in place so it doesn’t move & silicone sealant can dry up. I took two pieces of paper towels & put one in front & one in back & wrapped a zip tie around spoiler to tighten it. I used paper towel were the zip tie came around so it wouldn’t scratch my spoiler. Also if your zip ties aren’t long enough then combine them together till they are. I left it like that for 2 days to be sure the silicone sealant dried up.
9) What you can also do is drill two screws to keep the new Clear LED Bar in place. What I did is used a long Phillips Drill Bit (6in. long) & just drilled two screws thru the 2 tabs on the Clear LED into the spoiler. (Obviously the OEM holes are off so you will have to make 2 new holes)
10) Your done!!! Sit back & drink a cold one to a job well done that nobody has on their Max!
(P.S. I completed this project 10/01/02 & its now 04/28/03 & I've had no problems)
