sammerc's 1966 Mercury Monterey

This is my first car that I plan on fixing up. I just got it. I now need to know what to do with it. It has a 390 big block. I have already got the gas tank cleaned. I need to get a paint job and do a little body work to it. I need to fix the fuel line and the pump. I also need to put a carbuator kit in it. We took a little road trip about 100 miles and well it ran really good for about the first 50-60 miles and then we had troubles going up inclines. It would get up the inclines barely but all it did was chug up the hill at about 35-40 mph then it was pretty normal when we went down or just on straight aways.

Great piece!! Try to hang on to it. I too made the mistake of selling my 66 and now searching for another. Mine was all white w/blue inside. all the windows were limo black including a third of the front windshield. 235/60/15 on the front 255/60/15 tucked in the rear. Lowered the front by 3 inches. If you put larger diameter dual exhaust, it give it a nice rumble.

Sweet car!! My dad had a 68 Monterey and we still have it but its badly deteriated. Tougher to find Montereys around these days so you'd better keep it for along time. good luck with your ride!

Nice ride! When I bought my 72 Monterey, I found a customer copy of the original sales contract and it shows that the original owner of my 72 traded in a 66 like yours. I was curious about the 66's because of that. I actually have the original owners manual and warranty card and some other stuff too. Interesting stuff. Anyway, good luck with yours and keep us posted on your progress. Check out my ride some time.

Sami, here's some help on the 390 "Special". The 390 with the automatic trans was rated at 275 hp and 405 ft/lbs of torque. The manual trans engine had 265 and 401. That's why the auto trans engine is the "special" version. Here's a valuable link-- http://www.mercurystuff.com/#1966 I made the mistake of selling my '66 Monterey in 2000...after being in the family since new! My dad bought it in '66 and it was my first car (sound familiar?) in 1976. I regret the decision to sell it so much I'm trying to find it again, if not to buy it back, at least see it again. Keep yours so you'll have no regrets. Post updates so we can see your progress. I'm excited for you!
