As I have said to some who have asked me on the boards, I dont like BFG Mud Terrains. Even so, a deal is a deal, so when I had a chance to get the rim & tire package off the bosses FJ when I lifted mine, I couldnt pass up the price. I ran several trails and did plenty of highway driving on them, including a trip to Las Vegas for the Toyota 4x4 Owners Event immediately following SEMA last year. Over the last 6 months I have confirmed my dislike for the BFG MT - its the Zima of off road tires. I have been a Goodyear MTR loyalist for several years, having run them on several trucks and they never let me down. They are quiet for a MT on the road, great traction off road, and the sidewalls are as good as they come. I was hoping to trade my MT's for a set of MTRs - wishing someone would want the extra inch and I'd have my good ol' Goodyears back & under my current rig. They were up for sale or trade for over a month and nothing was happening. Then I saw the ad for the new Pro Comp Xtreme MT and took a closer look. Having run the regular Pro Comp MT, AT & X Terrain in the past, I knew they made a good quality tire, but was always leary of the 2 ply sidewall. The new Xtreme Mud Terrain solves that issue, with 6 tread plys, and 3 sidewall plys. It also incorporates a new sidewall and tread pattern, with siping (little grooves cut into the tread blocks that aid in water dispersion, more even tread wear, and much improvd grip.) Being buddies with top staff at Pro Comp, I phoned them, and after they aswered all my questions, ordered up a set (YES I paid for them). They arrived yesterday and I was drooling over them and wondering how much of an improvement they would be over the BFG MT's, and if they will measure up to the bar the Goodyears set.
Well, I installed them this morning and I am extremely pleased with the look and performance they offer. They are much quieter than the BFG MT's, track much straighter over uneven pavement, cornering, and under hard braking. I also noticed that they are extremely well balanced - My BFG's were computer spin balanced twice and both times they had a slight shimmy at mid & higher speeds in the steering wheel. I peeled all the weights off the rims when changing them this morning and when I was driving down to have them balanced was expecting the worst. Man I was surprised to find out there was NO SHIMMY with NO WEIGHTS. I saw no need to have it done immediately. Every one of the BFGs had at least 3.5oz per wheel, some were as high as 6oz. To me that says quality. I am going to have my FJ realigned tomorrow and will have them check the balancing while they are at it, but I doubt it will need much.
First impression: These tires may be my new favorite. They look and drive at least as good as the MTR on the road, next week at Stoddard and the following week at TDS will be the tryouts on the off road areas, I'll report back when I have a better off road impression, or if any issues pop up. If you are tossing around buying a set for your FJ, they will be on a Buy 3 get 1 free special next month at 4 Wheel Parts - I think they were a good investment. Here are some pics for comparison, both are 35x12.5R17's:

The BFGs that came off this morning -

The new Pro Comp Xtreme Mud Terrains -

Heres a comparison on the vehicle, Pro Comps in front, BFG's in back, remember, these are the same size tire. They make the BFG's look sissy -

And finally a front on shot, what lowered Hondas see in the rearview after I hit the train horns! -

I have ZERO regrets offing the BFG's and I'm dying to try these off road to see how they measure up.
