7.30 sec 1/8 mile with 6.1L and supercharger at Elkcreek, Virginia 7-18-09

Here is the Time Slip. Right Lane #91

Here is a video of the car doing it's first laps at VIR for its shack down.  Go to Page 4 for more information on raod racing modifications and set up for road racing.

In stock form this car was quick only requiring 5.0 sec to pass 60MPH. Even though in most standards that is fast enough, the car is so well set up from the factory that the trip to 60MPH is uneventful. The car even deceives your senses at 100MPH making you feel like you are traveling less than 80MPH (surprise this is suppose to be a luxury car. right?). There has to be a solution for this dilemma. AH of course a supercharger..... More power.... 425 cranking ponies is just not enough. I think we would all agree that more power will solve just about any problem. Right? Late for work - more power. The other car is faster - more power. It takes to long to mow the yard - more power. World hunger - more power (ok not every problem). So, as the story goes The SRT-8 was given what was needed - more power.

Outside of the drive train the car is stock. Long tube headers and 3" exhaust, with high flow racing Cats were installed. This provided a very nice exhaust note. One might even say that it rivals Luciano Pavarotti as the exhaust note hits the high octaves. But of course this was only the beginning. Next a Paxton Novi 1500 hair drier was installed along with its water cooled after cooler.

The crank pulley was exchanged for a larger diameter that would help the forced induction to reach 12psi. With the original compression ratio of 10.4:1 and that addition of almost 1 more atmosphere to the air charge the compression is now in the 18-19:1. This was calculated is using the equation for the effective compression ratio with an air charge booster ((boost PSI/14.7)+1) X static compresion ratio. There goes pump gas. For optimal performance this beast need to drink a minimum of 110 octane at full boost to prevent a Nevada Test Site Bombing under the hood. Once the car was tuned it was able to coral about 650 stallions at the crank and better than 550 at the rear wheels. Problem solved. Well, almost solved. Now it is almost impossible to get the power to the ground. The stock Goodyear F1 Supercar rubber just isn't up to the job falling short in both width and grip. Given the right combination this beast should be capable of flying through the traps of the 1/4 mile at sub 12 sec. The test will come this spring when the local track opens and testing begins. The best part of this project has been that the car looks non-threatening. At first glance it looks like and ordinary 300, but what a sleeper she is. And now at 190+MHP it is a ride not to be forgotten. Look out Viper here I come with the whole family.

Check out the new racing wheels and tires. The set pictured will be for the 1/4 mile. Finding wheels for this car is not easy. I searched everywhere. The lug pattern is not available in many off stock sizes (under 20" diameter) A lot of people are using the Ford mustang lug pattern for the Chyrslers. This is not a smart idea. The two sizes are very close 5 X 114.5 - Ford and 5 X 115 - Chrysler. By using the Ford pattern you are placing a lot os extra stress in the lugs. Also wheels may not center very well causing a vibration in the car, which again will add to the strees on the lugs and cause them to fail.

I purchased these wheels through Discount Tire and had them shipped to my door. They are Voxx 18" x 9" (9" wide were the widest available with this lug pattern.) and a 20mm off set. They were a great price as well at around $450.00. Once they arrived I had a friend paint the red and black for a for a more slick look. He did a great job don't you think? Yes I know... Why 18" wheels when everyone else is biggie sizing. The stock rear gear is set for highway cruising and top speed. By putting the 18" on the affective rear gear is now close to 4.00. The stock tires are over 29" in diameter. The new tires are just over 25". An added effect is that the ride hight is reduced by almost 2". This helps both at the 1/4 mile for wind reduction and road track by lowering the ceter of gravity for better cornering, but this makes it almost impostable to drive around.  The front air damn was already scratching the pavement on my driveway. Now it is almost impossible to get out with out draging the exhaust even when departing at a 45 degre angle. The tires that wrap these wheels are hoosier. 305/35/18" (for 1/4 mile track runs) full slicks in the rear and 275/40/18" in the front. The rear tires will get changed to 285/35/18" for track days. Just some added info. Most people I spoke with said that 18" would not fit on the SRT-8. The comments ran from "They won't clear the brakes" to "They won't clear the suspension". Just so you know they clear both. BUT THE CLEARANCE FOR THE FRONT BRAKES ARE VERY VERY CLOSE. There is about .025" of clerance around the calipers on the front that suround 14.2" rotors. No other clearance problems were noted, although the 305s on the rear are very close. I have heard some say that they are getting the 315s on the rear. I'm not sure that those would clear with this offset. By the way check out those beautiful long tube header throught the wheelwell.

Now you can see that I just might have enough stick to the pavement that I should turn a good 1/4 mile track time. Stay Tuned. Test and Tune is 5/18/07. I plan on Filming the runs and will post them the first of the week.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

This is a video of parade laps on watkin glen. Tell me what do you think of the exhaust note on the front straight?

This is my weekday fun car. Check out my weekend fun car. A race prepared 96 C4 LT4 Corvette. It's not the fasted in town but I sure handles like a dream.

Wow, that is a sick engine build. It's also nice to see a 300 that isn't sitting on stupid-huge chrome rims. Check out my turbo Duster.
