Just picked up this 68 vert project on Jan. 20, 2007. It's completely original with a 327 and powerglide transmission. Even the panels and pans are original. Apparently it sat in storage for about 25 years, which explains the lack of rust that is evident on most Camaros this old. I am technically the 4th owner, but the guy I bought it from is more or less a dealer in old Camaro projects. The guy he bought from had some sort of dealership years ago, but is now rather ill. I guess he has a bunch of old cars and car parts in storage, including an original unused 71 or 72 Hemi crate motor. From what I was told, the guy is sitting on a gold mine, but won't get rid of it because he'll "get back to working on it someday." Same old story. So sad.
Once I make room in the garage, I'll begin disassembling it. Clean up the frame, replace the trunk pan and rear quarter panels. Engine needs a good tune up or better yet, some good rework. Eventually, I'll put in a new interior and new top. End product will hopefully be a solid, bright yellow with a black bee-line stripe around the nose and a black top. Interior will be white (or pearl/parchment) seats and door panels with black carpet and dash. A little bit custom with an original look.
This is my first attempt at a restoration. I rebuilt the suspension on my 79 Corvette (my first classic car and all time favorite model, the C3) last winter. I think that gave me the bug. I plan on doing as much of the work as I can by myself. I've got most of the necessary and handy tools: pneumatics, welder, sand blaster. The only thing I won't do is the paint job or the machine work on the engine (if I go that route).
I hope to have it done by Spring of '09. Depends on when my wallet calls it quits.
