in response to RioRcR: the engines were also used in the mercury tracer, and ford festiva, if memory serves. upon teardown of these engines, the reasoning for this should become plainly evident: they were mass purchaised by a Japanese manufacturing super giant Mitsubishi. maybe you've heard of them before? thought so. haha. the reason for all of this is that back in the late 80's, mazda hit some hard times and was starting to fall flat on its face. in stepped ford, who offered to buy them out and help mazda get back on its feet until they bought themselves back somewhere in about '95. but enough history. on a personal note, i really like what you have done with your car! and out of curiosity, when you swapped in the 1.8l, were you able to maintain the stock Mazda ECU, or did you have to use the one out of the Kia? This is something that i have been thinking about doing with my 323.
