This is a posthumous page for my dear departed Volvo 940 Turbo.
I bought the car shortly after my first accident (see my I30 for details). Since I was only given half the budget I had with my I30, I had to look for something cheap. I bought the car for just under $3500 including taxes. It had around 260,000 KMs when I bought it, but I wasn't really worried about that because the car was in immaculate condition. One owner and dealer serviced for it's lifetime, after the tune up work I put into it, it was ready to go to 400+.
A little over a month and 3000 KMs after I bought the car, a young guy in a early 90s Civic slammed into my car while it was parked on the street. He must have been doing some speed (the limit was 40 KMPH) because he wrote off both our cars! The damage isn't really extensive, but being a 13 year old car, it wasn't worth repairing. Fortunately since I wasn't even in the car this time, the other driver was 100% at fault, unfortunately I had recently spent over $1000 tunning up the car, and I had put on a brand new set of winters the week before, so I didn't get close to the money I had invested into the car. Which is a good lesson, unless you're switching engines, putting in ICE or something else major, the value of a car will not go up.
I was really happy with the Volvo (well other than the fuel mileage). I would certainly recommend this car to budding mechanics looking to work on something easy. The engine is well laid out and there is lots of room to work under the hood. Everything was very forgiving too (well other than the fuel filter...). Plus there are some great online resources (7xx/9xx FAQ, Brickboard, FCP Groton) that will keep the car running for a long time to come.
