I bought another engine!
I was going to put a turbo on the original 998, (turbos are my specialty) but I've found something almost as cool (see below).
See my 1985 Celica GTS turbo to see what I mean about the turbo thing!

While I'm at it, here is my brothers hotrod

Anyway the engine was from a mini race car that looks like it was set-up in the late 60's or early 70's.
It's a Cooper 998 with dome pistons, a ported and polished 12g295 head, double valve springs, an Avonbar 1.5 valvetrain, a rare Derrington intake manifold and a true "made in Italy" Weber 46 IDA carb with 34mm venturis. I just have to try to get it to fit under the hood.
The original stock engine is rated @39HP!! The stock cooper engine is rated at 52HP but this engine, properly tuned with my Jacobs ignition, carb and nice big free-flow exhaust should hopefully push into the 60's (YES THAT'S RIGHT!!!! 60 BLISTERING WHEEL SHREDDING HORSEPOWER!!!!!! BE AFRAID...BE VERY AFRAID!!!). I never thought I'd be so glad to get 60HP out of an engine :-)
Here is a shot of the Avonbar 1.5 rockers and double valve springs. Also here is a picture of the 12g295 casting number in the head along with the avonbar steel posts and solid rocker spacers.
Now I just have to make it pretty!! I've already polished the MINIFIN aluminum valve cover with some Autosol and elbow-grease. I guess I'll sell the other one. No wait....just sold on ebay!
Well here is the carb after a little attention. It has been professionally cleaned & rebuilt and the velocity stacks have been hit with that same Vermillion orange! (no air filters!!).
Here is a picture I found of a car with the same setup and that big ol' carb sticking up out of the hood! I think it's a cool look but not the look I'm going for. Maybe a bit more stealthy!!
Manifold Alteration
Here are a few pictures of the work I did to the intake manifold to try to make it fit under the hood.
I cut off the flanges that fit on the engine and re-welded them with the help of Bernie again from RCS. He's good!!
Here you can see the flange on the carb side cut off and black marker drawn on to show where I was going to remove material.
And here is the same manifold after all the cutting, welding and grinding. I gained 55mm or about 2 1/8" in height. It doesn't sound like much but it all adds up. It should almost fit now! I will probably still have to put a little "bump" in the hood about an inch high, but that's OK.
I doesn't look like it, but it is the same manifold. As you can see I sandblasted it to give it a more uniform appearance.
Before.........................................................................................After
Here it is with the carb on it (before I sandblasted it.)
Here it is sandblasted, & painted and the custom fuel line is attached. It accepts the screw-on type GM fuel filters. Sometimes I impress myself!!
