1986 944 Turbo (typ 951):
This is my 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo. I bought it a couple years ago with 209k miles on it, and it now has more than 230k miles on it, but it still goes like a scalded dog and has been extremely reliable throughout. I am convinced that if you take good care of the 951 engine, keep on top of the belt and oil, the engine is as stout as a small-block Chevy! (Besides, where else can you buy a legitimate 155mph car for under $7k?)
I run a vintage road rally called the Carolina Trophy Link text, and I use the 944 Turbo to set the routes, and it's the perfect car for that use. Very fast, comfortable even after long hours in the saddle, and capable of handling even the twistiest roads with aplomb.
The color is "stone gray metallic" with a burgundy interior, but I am in the process of changing the burgundy interior to black. I fitted the combination of real Fuchs wheels that were originally used on the 1986 cup cars, so these are the 951-part number 16x8's on the front, and the rears are the 16x9's that were originally fitted to the 3.3L 911 Turbo. The tires are 225/50-16's and 245/45-16 Continentals. I left the suspension all stock, because although a lot of people think Porsches are underdamped from the factory, I disagree. I think Porsche factory damping is among the best in the world, and the car is comfy and handles beautifully on all different types of road conditions.
The engine is pretty much stock, except for an AutoThority Stage 2 kit and a Lindsey boost enhancer. I also have a Lindsey 3" exhaust and cat bypass fitted, so it has a wicked snarl and excellent power on boost. But the driveability and reliability are excellent, and it's a joy to drive. Peak boost is a relatively modest 1.0bar (14.7psi). I've fitted a set of Cobra seats, plus a couple of additional gauges (Autometer boost and fuel-mixture gauges in the center console.)
Many people ask me about the vented nose (header) panel. It is a custom-made hybrid that was created by combining a stock 951 header panel with a factory 924 Turbo (931) panel. If you're interested in how I did it, drop me an email, but suffice to say it was MUCH more difficult than I expected and NOT for the faint of heart! But I love the quasi-factory look much better than the aftermarket fiberglass ones you see everywhere.
Overall, it's a great car. A daily driver that I beat the living hell out of, and it keeps coming back for more. I can cover large distances comfortably, and still run neck and neck with a Ferrari 355 when I hammer the throttle. The 944 Turbo is surely one of the best performance values on the planet.
Next up? An engine rebuild and some bolt-on power goodies. If you have any advice or experience with either 951 engine rebuilds or bolt-on performance, LET ME KNOW!
