This page will show you how to do a $50 paint job and make it look nice and clean. Besides $50 is better than spending $1000+ lol
Well some things I can tell you are I'm going to use Tremclad (rustolium in the states) and I'm going to paint my car with it. I will make a write up on it on how to do it and how not to do it.
I'm getting the paint this Friday and painting this Sunday night I hope.
Check back often as I update this page as it goes.
This is a list that I have made so far that shows what I need and what I need to do.
How to use the roller method of painting your car
1) Prep the car
Sand, fix dents, fix rust, etc.
You dont have to prime the car
2) Get the right paint
Any rust type paint (tremclad, rustolium, etc)
In a can, not a spray can. Dont shake it or you will have to let it sit for a week to let the air bubbles out, just stir it with a paint stick.
3) Get the right sand paper
When you first sand the car for paint use 180-250 grit to give the paint something to bit into.
Dont use anything with less grit or more grit because youll see the sanding marks and the paint wont stick
Buy 600-2000 grit sand paper because you will need it later on.
4) The items needed
Rust paint
4 high density foam rollers
Foam brushes
Mineral spirits
Paint tray
Sand paper
Tape
Towel
5) The Process
Sand your car down with 180-250 grit, then dip the towel in Mineral Spirits and whip all the dust away.
Mix the paint to the consistency of milk with the mineral spirits (If you mix it in the paint can it will thicken up every time you use it so make sure its always the same thickness of milk.)
Put the roller in the paint and start painting the car with the weight of the roller (be quick it dyes fast, Also dont put it on to thick or you will get orange peel!)
Once an area is done take your roller (or foam brush) and lightly drag it across the surface to pop the air bubbles (LIGHTLY!! It self levels!)
It might look to thin but thats how you want it. Now put the second coat on.
Wet sand as soon as the second coat is dry with 600 grit sand paper
Apply 3-4 coat and wet sand with 800 grit
Apply 5-6 coat and wet sand with 1000 grit
Apply 7-8 coat and wet sand with 1500 or 2000 grit
If you still need more coats than continue and use 1500 or 2000 grit sand paper.
If you get orange peel than sand it all away and continue painting where you last where
Set the car out in the sun and let it sit for about a month or two to let the paint harden, then take some polishing compound and use a random orbital buffer to keep the paint from fadding.
You want to let the paint harden so it wont bubble up and make your paint look cheap (even though it is lol)
6) Finished product
I have seen this paint and it looks as good if not better than a factory paint job.
This paint is really tuff from what I hear and its great if you live in an area with dirt roads because you just buff the scratches out with your orbital buffer and some more compound
Now, here comes the price list lol

Mini (4") Foam Roller................$5.46
Foam Brush Set (3pc).................$2

Update March 12/07
Well here is where I am at right now, all I need to do now is sand the hood and bondo. Then I'll sand the car top to bottom with 60 grit, then 150 grit, and last 180 grit. I only did this to get more bite for the paint.
12 hours so far into the prep of the car, still need to wash it to.

Update March 13/07
After a few more hours of prepping the car, it now has its first coat of paint. In my opinion it looks really good!

Update March 14/07
This is an second coat on, now all I have to do is wet sand and then I'm ready to paint again.
(Sorry for the dust in the pictures)

Update March 16/07
I wet sanded for 3 hours and now I put on coat number three, looking food so far now all I need to do is do 3 more coats.

Update March 18/07
I put down coat 4, wet sanded and then also put down coat number five.
Coat 4

Coat Five

Update March 22/07
Pulled my car outside to get some shots. You can see all the runs and orange peel but it looks good (BTW I was kinda seeing how much I need to wet sand on the fender.)

Update March 23/07
Pulled my car outside again and started to wet sand the car down again with 400 grit so I can get all the orange peel out. Well I killed a sander, my elbow, and I didn't even get the car done because the sun went down!! Oh well, I'll get it done tomorrow.

Update April 1/07
I fixed the sander and continued to sand. After about 6 hours and orange peel still there I said F*** it and switched to 150 grit and even then it took 4 more hours to get all of it gone. (damn!!!) Well I started over and here are some pictures of the car sanded down ready for coat number one.

Don't let me get bored and leave primer around lol
Coat number one after all that sanding

Some minor wet sanding to get rid of the runs, but I have no orange peel to speak of yet.

Update
Its done, never again will I try this, to much orange peel and runs. It would have been better if I took my time and didn't do it half assed. Oh well I'm saving to buy some good paint then I'll get a painter to paint it.
