March 2005 - Humble Beginnings
Originally a 96Bhp 1.6 4G18 Lancer bought in 2005, one of the very first ones to be sold in the UK. I had wanted to get an Evo 8, but I was too young, and insurance was too high, so I ended up with an 8000 lancer.
It was a car I loved right from when I got it... It felt right for me.
I have fond memories of the 1.6 engine. It was not fast at all, but I remember how fun it was to rev the balls out of the engine trying to overtake "faster" cars! As Freddy Mercury once said, "Those days are all gone now".
April 2005 - First Mods
So, the first thing I did to the car was to add an Evo 8 spoiler, Evo 8 Momo Wheel and an Evo 8 Vortex Generator. Because I bought the car on launch day in the UK, and put those bits on right away, the car got quite a lot of attention even back then, as no-one in the UK had seen a lancer before, let alone one with Evo bits on it! I very quickly also bought a pair of black housing headlamps.
June 2005 - I crashed it!
My car originally had a cloth interior, so that was changed for leather. Then one night, whilst driving down unfamilar roads, I had a crash and trashed the front end of the car! The picture below shows the buckled central engine support crossmember!
The car was then gone from early June till end of July whilst being fixed at the Mitsubishi Dealer. As soon as I got it back I added an RRM Carbon Fibre Evo 6 Style Bonnet/Hood. I remember getting the car back for the first time... Its such a nice driving car even when it was so basic. When I did get my car back though, they had only replaced one headlamp, and because I had changed mine to black ones, I ended up with a stock silver one!
September 2005 - HID Headlamps
Decided to get HID lights because part of the reason I crashed was because I couldnt see very well!
October 2005 - Painted Brake Calipers
So, we painted the brake calipers red, and then stuck brembo stickers on them. A silly mod really.
December 2005 - Suspension! First serious modifcation
I decided I wanted to eliminate the chance of losing control of my car again, as I felt the crash had been a combination of my stock halogen headlamps being awful, and my suspension being too soft, and hence why I lost control. So I ordered from RRM a set of Lancer ES lowering springs. They didnt fit... So I ordered TEIN Basics. Glad I did, as they are awesome and really transformed the car! I have fond memories of flooring it going round corners and finding the car very grippy! I got the dealer to install these, because I didnt know much about cars back then!
January 2006 - Rear Bumper and Bootlid
I posted a topic on Evom, asking why no-one had made an Evo style conversion for the rear of the 04-06 lancer. Little did I know, Accolade and Cerious Performance looked at that topic, and decided to make them. I bought them right away and when they came, I installed them, and loved the new look!
March 2006 - Bought a 2.4 Mitsubishi Grandis Engine on Impulse
I had always envied the US Lancer Ralliart, and had often wondered if it could be put in my car. One day, I found a used 4G69 for sale, and had to buy it. And so started the collecting of parts which would take me all my salary until October. Every month I bought new parts... The first thing I bought was the ECM, followed by the alternator, and motor mounts.
I used a website called http://www.vw-auto-parts.com for all the brand new parts I needed.
In the early days of this project, I'd imagine it would be done by a garage or even the Mitsu dealer. I know now that wouldnt have worked, and I have one man to thank for this whole project being possible, my best mate Carl's dad. One day he dropped dead, and Carl and his mum moved house. Their new house had a big garage... and with that, we realised we could do it ourselves. Thanks Carl's Dad, in death you gave us the ability to do amazing things with our cars.
August 2006 - Evo IX Front Bumper
Accolade came out with an Evo IX bumper. I got it, and I reckon it looks ace!
October 2006 - The Engine Swap
I booked two days off work to do this. First day we'd get the engine out, second day put the new one in. Oh how I underestimate this. By the end of the second day, we hadnt even finished unplugging the engine and draining fluids.
It would take us until Christmas, most nights working, to do the swap. It was on the day after our Iron Maiden gig, that the car started for the first time!
The First Drive as a 2.4
Well it pretty much blew me away, it was super fast! It had a few niggles, that we eventually sorted out, but it really was a cool car at last!
March 2007 - The AWD Project
In March, I researched converting the car to AWD, and realised it would be possible with Mitsubishi Outlander parts. So I began collecting parts for this. Work will start by the end of the year.
August 2007 - Heated Seats and Cruise Control
We installed heated seat pads in all 5 seats and added cruise control.
November 2007 - Turbo Arrives, Car gets Stolen
On November 8th 2007, my turbo kit arrived. Later that very day, the car was stolen. They broke the rear passenger window, opened the doors, and hot-wired the car. I havent seen it again since. If the car hasnt been found by February 2008 - I will use the insurance payout for an Evo IX.
