The Story
So I moved back to So Cal after a little event on the east coast. I had sold my Grand am and was left with a 1998 Oldsmobile 88. After driving that for a month I went to a Pontiac dealership to buy a 2006 Impulse Blue GTO. After signing the paperwork, the dealership backed out trying to get me to pay more. I walked.
I was then in search of a good condition Camaro Z28 or SS. I wanted any color other than red, 6 speed, and preferably an 02 35th anniversary edition. I was also looking for low miles.
After test driving a few cars, I found one in Bell, CA with 9700 miles on it, but it was an 01, red, auto, and a Z28. I went to look anyway. They didn't think the car was all that modified, maybe intake and thats all. I test drove it and took it home the next day.
After inspecting it further I saw that it had lots of parts from Granatelli Motor Sports (GMS). I wrote an email to the company asking if they knew anything about the car. I heard back from the owner, Joe Granatelli, and he stated that this was 1 of 5 built . I went to see him a few months later and he verified that this one is actually the first one, and he did all of the work on it himself.
On June 1 I submitted pictures and an article of my car to Domestic Drivers Magazine for the July/August issue. On June 30 I received notification that the car is one of the featured cars for the July/August 2007 issue of Domestic Driver magazine. check out domesticdriver.com for info on a free subscription.
When I met with J.R. Granatelli he informed me that my car had special badging on it. I asked him if he knew where I could get more, and at the time he said he would look for some. 4 months later 2 sets of badges arrived in the mail.
I was able to get a hold of Matco Tools about my car. Apparently they ordered 5 cars to their top sales franchises. One person wanted a truck instead, and another wanted all tools instead of a car. Of the 3 that were built, the first one (mine) was actually built and signed by Granatelli. The other 2 were shipped to the new owners in stock form, and the parts were shipped to a dealership and the dealer would install the parts.
I entered the car in the 2008 Super Chevy car show at California Speedway. I recieved second place, but whats even better was Chevy High Performance Magazine shot the car, and my car appeared in the October 2008 issue.
With that intro, enjoy these pages. This isnt the fastest camaro out there, but it is clean, low miles, and rare.
