I originally bought this car as a daily driver Muscle Car. I like the style and you dont see many of these on the Road. My first drag racing experience at the track was a bit humbling ,The 351 Cleavland Powered the car to a traction limited 16.8@ 81 mph. I tried to tune the motor for more power but it was tired. I grenaded the motor with a WOT shift to neutral racing my buddy's 1970 Nova. The choice I had was to build another Cleavland at about $1800 or install a used 460 from a 71 Lincoln at $400. I chose the latter. The First 460 totally changed the personality of my car. The 16 second behemoth changed into a legitimate 14 second car. A freshened up motor With that humble beginning What we have here is the a latest me in the 13s and dialed in ran a best of 12.9 @105 . This motor is another step up in my quest to have one of the fastest 72 Torinos around. This is Not a high dollar checkbook motor . All of the parts were off the shelf or used equipment ,The most exotic thing here is the Crower 1.8 Rocker Arms . With this car I want to prove that you can go fast in a big car without breaking the bank . I will be adding pics periodically as I get more done and I will Post my times when the car is raced. Feel free to ask me questions on the build. I am not Shy.

I wanted an aluminum radiator ,but the aftermarket radiators that I checked out were too pricey . I came across a 2 core Modine in a 5.8 EFI Bronco at the wrecking yard. I measured it up and figured it would fit just fine with a little modifications. Just to be safe I checked the interchange and found this was the exact same Radiator used on 7.5 liter Trucks also. I had to fold the bottom lip and I laid some dense foam in the bottom of the core support. The mounting tabs used to mount in trucks needed to be trimmed off. My Torino radaitor mounts fit the Modine tanks with a little tweaking. I got the Idea to use the Taraus electric fan from Fordmuscle.com article on using a Taraus fan detailing how well they work in hot rod applications . So I picked up the first nice one I came across. I have used aftermarket fans in the past and was never much impressed. The inexpensive units dont have much of a shround and installation is always a bit hokey. The Taraus fan has a built in shroud and a very eficient turbine style fan blade. It also has a two speed motor that can be hooked up to a thermostat. I have it wired up in the high speed mode and it is only used if the water Temp gets over 170 degrees. The entire setup cost a little over $100.00 . A comparable aftermarket Cooling system would cost well over $300.000 probably closer to 4 bills .

Fuel Cell & Rear Mounted Battery:Scored a 16 Gallon fuel cell for next to nothing, and the battery box came from my wife's work at the employee cost. Seen the sheet metal and thin aluminium trunk fire walls I wanted something different . I got a deal on a half sheet of 1/8" diamond plate . I think it looks Kick ass. The entire trunk was treated to several cans of trunk splatter paint . Godzillatorino's 1972 Ford Gran TorinoGodzillatorino's 1972 Ford Gran Torino

Rear suspension consists of the stock four link set up and a 9" with mini spooled 350 gears. I boxed the lower trailing arms and added a rear sway bar from a 75 Ranchero. Upgraded the Sway bar to polyurethane bushings . The Air bags are Airlift Load Assist 1000 a must if you have any axle hop issues. Just the addition of the bags eliminated the severe axel hop my car was having . Godzillatorino's 1972 Ford Gran Torino Godzillatorino's 1972 Ford Gran Torino

My First three runs with the new motor, 1st pass I was very nervous . It has been three years since I ran this car and I have made lots of changes . On the first pass and I short shifted it through all three gears still pulled a 12.14 @113. The car felt fast and a little squirrely,it may have been just me. Second pass we checked the motor and all was well so we thought ,After installing the hood back on the car,the motor seemed a little funny ,it was missing a good deal. Pulled a 12.05 @ 114 . When I got it in the pits and checked things out we noticed #5 Plug wire had pulled off the spark plug. So it was actually running on only 7 cylinders explaining the miss. I was ready for run number 3 and the car wouldn't start. I had left the fan and water pump running, so I assumed that it was the battery. As Luck would have I had no jumper cables or a charger. I stole the battery out of my pit car,and swapped it in the beast. Still no start. A quick check of the starter motor and I found the problem . The jumper from the solenoid to the power post had severed in half, I made a jumper out of 8 gauge wire an a couple of terminals . While I was fixing that my buddy Tom re jetted the carburetor up 2 since the car was running lean. 3rd pass the motor seemed choppy the whole way. The temp got up to 210 and my fan was not working, I staged deep and tripped the lights. I was not launching the car so I got a little confused on the red . I left the line 1 second off the red and pulled a 12.60 a 115.7 Mph. That speed should be good for an 11.7 . After that pass the car didn't want to run at idol. We checked the float levels and they were low, adjusting them didn't help any until we realized the tank was empty and the fuel pressure was at close to zero. We added fuel and had to readjust the floats . Now the car runs perfect with 5 gallons of gas in the cell. Pass #4 , I was searching for an 11 second pass all day and this was my last shot. TNT was from 12-4 pm .By the time I made it to the staging lanes I had only 6 minutes to spare. The car hooked beautifully and it felt so strong through 1st gear I shifted to second at about 1000 rpms to early ,hit 3rd gear at 5700 and went though the traps at around 5600. Not only did make it in the 11s I made it deep With an 11.64 At 116.40 MPH !! With out the Short shift it might have pulled an 11.5

The interior was striped down some to save wait. The Heater and A/C were taken out . I removed the carpet underlay and sound deadening. I installed a racing bucket and new carpet . The shifter is a B&M Pro Ratchet . Kept my stock steering wheel, pulled the factory guages in favor of an Auto Gage 8000 rpm Tach and  Autometer-Water Temp,Oil, and Volt Meter. The two switches are for the Moroso water pump and Taurus Fan. Rear seats were kept to keep noise down a little. I also like to give rides to my kids from the pits to the staging lanes. One no one is looking I will give the throttle a stomp. The kids get a cheap thrill.

upgrade the distributer oil pump drive shaft with an ARP unnit . Dont assume it is the right leegnth either. The arp shaft needed to be shortened slightly in for my motor, I havent had any nprolems wityh my distributer gear ,but it is a good idea to double pin also. once you start making power i have heard of the single pins sheering off.
