HID/True Xenon and "City Light" Upgrade

The low beams on my E38 are projector-style and used H1 bulbs. I decided to upgrade them to true HIDs, after trying several different types of "white" bulbs (including PIAA).

In the picture below, you can see the HID bulb mounted inside the H1 socket. I had to bend one of the metal tabs to get the beam pattern correct. You can also see the wiring (inside wire loom) tapped off of the parking light for "City Light" (more on this later).

These ballasts, unlike the OEM type, did not cause the "check low beam" message to appear.

The HID bulbs I choose were "Crystal White". They have a very purplish tone, similar to Audi HIDs. They are much whiter and more purple than OEM BMWs. Notice that the high beams are slightly glowing. These are not Daytime Running Lights. They are 5W 194 bulbs installed inside the small side recepticles inside the high beam reflectors. They are wired to come on when the parking lights are on. They give off a very cool glow.

These lights look a lot more purple "in person" and at night.

Nice upgrades! I'm in the process in doing the same thing and could use your help. 98 528i, is a ground sent from switch to turn on the lights or by a 12v? I have a kit that can be used both ways but I need to know which way. Any would be apreciated: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=912271

Good job! I have a solution for low beam error if the system checking <8 ohms when the light is off (your way will turn on both dummy light and HID light). Email me at ircbreaker@dslextreme.com

First off I wanna say that BMW 7 cars are the most badass car around. I like the car and thanks for the xenon instructions I just put in a 10000k kit thanks to your pics. I got a tip for them headlights, it's a nasty upgrade without gettin the facelift (99-01)headlights or spending much money. email me if you are interested greekmeek@aol.com
