1978 Ford Durango (Fairmont)

FOR SALE: $3,800 - Our Durango had 92,000 original miles when we bought it, and it now has about 102,000. We still drive it occassionally during the nicer weather and put about 1,500 miles a year on it.

The Ford Durango was built from 1978 through 1983 by National Coach Products of Los Angeles, Calif. As I understand it they produced about 220 units during this period. They would receive brand new Ford Fairmont Futuras, then chop and re-outfit them. They would then return them to various Ford dealerships to be sold as new vehicles. A process similar to custom van conversions.

This is a nice vehicle, but is not a true Durango. Durango's had a reinforced fiberglass bed inserted into the opening left by the removal of the trunk and C-pillar area. The floor and sides of the bed area are one piece and are not carpeted. They also have a functioning drop-down tailgate which necessitated adding a small filler piece between the end of the quarter panel and the taillight assembly. This does not have that. Durangos were also only produced in 1981 and 1982. This is a nice custom Fairmont and is probably worth what you are asking, but it's not an original Durango.

That's cool. I have a 1984 Dodge Rampage, so crucks are interesting to me. I had never seen one of yours before, and I happened to stumble across one on Hemming's web page, and came looking for one here. You have the only one on CarDomain that I know of, keep it looking good. And if you want to sell it sometime, let me know. In the meantime, check out my little Dodge.
