I needed more power, as a stock 22RE engine in a 1984 Celica has 105 HP @ 4800 rpm and 137 Ft Lb of torque at 2800 rpm. I decided to use a 1983 Nissan 280 ZXT single turbocharger off a 2.8L 6 cylinder engine. I got the turbo for $150 on Ebay and rebuilt it myself.

The engine is stock with 185,000 miles on it. The engine doesn't burn any oil. I installed a new timing chain and new oil pump to be safe. When I removed the cylinder head the engine still had fresh hone marks NO noticeable wear on the cylinder bores, even after 185,000 miles. This is a 2nd owner car - with me being the 2nd owner. I paid $400 for the car.

I did not spend a great deal of money on this car, but the project was very rewarding indeed. The thrill of bringing a turbo engine to life after a year of meticulous work is unlike anything else. The torque and the sound are simply awe inspiring.

Awesome job! I had a '84 Celica GT-S years ago and always wanted to turbo it. I have a 1JZ '85 Supra now but one of these days I might copy what you've done as a second car. Nice work!

What's your specs on horsepower and tork now? Is it running faster than a V-6 now? Just to put it in perspective for us non mechanic heads. I wish I could drop that engine in my baby! I got a one of a kind GT-S convertible...you haven't seen one this color before. Come check it out! I have a clean white one that I might sell in 09' Drop that engine in it..wow! Picture of it is on my page too! Stop in and rank! Sanman

I'd love to do the same, but it's just not in my budget. Most of my time and money is spent patching sheetmetal. Mabey someday. The work looks extensive. I'm sure you've a MIG or TIG welder in your shop and a nice garage to work in. Let me know how the engine holds up. I'm still shopping around for an inline 6 for mine, which I would then consider turbocharging, as the extra bearing can take the extra tourque. Is your tranny and differential holding up to the power? Is there considerable turbo lag or is the delivery smooth?
