Question: If Pontiac were to re-introduce the Fiero as an all new mid-engine sports car or roadster (see sketches towards the bottom of page 2), would you buy it?

What American car has a mid-rear configuration and is 250lbs lighter than a Ferrari Enzo, 300lbs lighter than a Carrera GT and almost 500lbs lighter than a 2006 Corvette?

My 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT!!!

**Update**
Car was struck by a hit and run driver while parked in front of my house on June 16, 2007, actually being pushed into one of my other cars. Insurance company has declared it a total loss. So far they are offering $3000, but the car was worth more like twice that amount. =/
I will post an update with any further developments. Planning to retain the car with a salvaged title, but not sure what I'm going to do with it as of yet.

History/Bio:

I bought this car last year after deciding I wanted a Fiero GT. I am told this was one of the last cars ever built in Pontiac, Michigan. After deciding to look for a Fiero GT, what I was hoping to find was, if possible a 1988 and I wanted a silver GT without a factory wing (there were only 257 silver GT's built in 1988 total) which could have made the car I wanted virtually impossible to find - but incredibly I was able to find this car about within about 60 miles or so of where I live...

See page two for a list of whats already done and what I still have planned for her...

Why a Fiero?

I wanted something that would be seriously fun to drive, and for months in the back of my mind I was trying to think of something out there thats fun to drive, not too outrageously expensive to buy (or own/insure, etc), and if possible has decent enough fuel economy to be a daily driver. I am not fan of Miatas or imports in general (as in ricers) but I have respect for European imports and a few select jap imports and I put alot of consideration into what I wanted as a project considering alot of different cars including various imports, especially those considered sports cars or roadsters.

I always liked the Ferrari 308GTS, for an old school exotic they are not hard to find and you can buy them for under $30K, but they are expensive to fix or even just maintain. For that money or even less, you could pick up a 3rd gen RX-7 (gotta respect those) or an S2000 (which also deserves respect). A BMW M3 is another nice factory tuned car. They are all very driveable cars that offer a good balance of high performance, reliability, and economy. You could say the same of various luxury touring cars but I've owned and driven alot of them and I'm bored with them, I wanted more of a 'pure sports car' feel than a Mercedes, BMW or Audi sedan or coupe could offer. I'm done with luxury cars for a while, but the someday I want to buy a classic/vintage Rolls Royce, Bentley or MBZ (or maybe Maserati or Aston Martin). I also didnt want to spend that kind of money and wanted a project car to spend some money playing with, not making payments on, but something that was by no means a beater!

I'm not afraid to have something a little "different", in fact, I prefer something "different" and eventually it occurred to me that a Fiero GT might be just what I was looking for. I started to check them out and decided that even though I used to think the boxier (non-GT) Fieros were interesting (but also one of the biggest jokes on four wheels), that a GT - with its completely different aero body, was another story. The GT's fastback style gives the car beautiful lines - and compared with any Ferrari or other exotic, its far more practical and reliable to own and maintain. I strongly prefer GT's over SE, base, or Formula Fieros, but I do like all Fieros much more than I once did. They are well-made and wonderfully engineered cars. I was always into muscle cars and classics, then started to get into luxury cars and sports cars from there.

Fiero means "Great Pride" or "Very Proud" in Italian.
