Another NOHOME 1961 Austin-Healey 3000 post...

For some reason, it was decided to start from the back and work towards the front of the car. The bottom of the firewall and the two box sections that cover the trunk are the main areas of contention. The problem was that someone else had been here before the invention of the MIG welder. Everyting was brazed and/or cut with a torch. Due to this beautiful piece of craftmanship, it was decided to build a new spring cover box. First make a template:I finally found a use for those fliers that are tossed into your car at car shows! Then, cut and fold along the lines. It is important to think ahead for all the folds and tabs. You can see the repair piece along the bottom of the firewall. Once the old piece was cut off straight, it was an easy piece to make and install. I have not told the owner that I also want to do the passenger side spring box. It is a bit more involved and he wants to do a repair.

Nov 3, 2010 Shell is painted. Car will be going back together for the last time. Plan is to put the shell back on the rotsserie and start with the hydraulics and elecrical under the car. Hopefully, when the snow melts, the car will take a run down the driveway.

Next stop is going to be the rear axle. It is all painted and ready to go in. Springs might need a bit of work. Bad news is that a quick look inside the transmission does not look good. More work to be done. May 31, 2011 The rear end is in. I do not like the way the springs force the axle into the frame. Will have to see how that works out.The transmission is fixed. It was garbage inside in a lot of ways. The front hubs will be on as of June16, 2011 and that would make it a rolling chassis if the wheels were put on and dropped on the ground. I think Hydraulics are next on the list.

Engine and transmission are on stand and will run before installation. Carbs need to be rebuilt and will be the critical path to running the engine on the stand. suspect that brakes will be the next subsystem to focus on while we wait for the carb parts to arrive and get machined. Spring 2012: Wire harness is in place.

Today's date is March 10/09 Well the last update was back in November 08. So it might be fair to think that this is not moving. Actually, it is still going, only at a rate that fits the schedule. The body is actually starting to go together. There are some challenges with the front shroud as it has a few rot-spots that will need to be welded. Of course, I will need to learn how to weld aluminium.Meanwhile. panel alignment has been going on since February 09. It is going to take some patience to get all the gaps looking good.

All major systems are plumbed and working. Hope to have engine in and a quick run before the snow flies. Goal is to drop the enginein on Thursday Oct 11, 2012. Would be nice if this were done for next driving season. Closer than it looks really since the panels are fitted and ready to go on and then painted.

Another NOHOME 1961 Austin-Healey 3000 post...

Now here was a fun challenge: The rocker was too narow and did not line-up with the bottom of the door or front fender. We had to slice the rocker along the top and botton to create a "V" shape. The gap was welded-up, ground smooth and is now prety much invisible. You really can not be afraid to cut and slice when doing these cars, or things will never fit right

Another NOHOME 1961 Austin-Healey 3000 post...

Big day today. Oct 3 2009. Finally putting some coatings on the frame work. Restoring these things is an excersise in patience. Making the panels line up would try the patience of Job and then when things start to get to where it looks like a car, you have too take the whole thing apart AGAIN!!The underside is now primed and painted with IMRON. The top is primed and waiting for final body color; most likely a cherry black if some people have their way, or some odd gold color other othewise. Regardless, it is a big morale boost to have the undepinings in one color.As an aside, painting one of these things takes forever and a LOT of paint. There are so many nooks and crannies to paint that it would be impossible to do without a rotisserie. Still missed the odd spot after half a gallon of paint and a whole days spraying.
