Greg's '79 Rabbit Racer!
This is my '79 Rabbit. I bought it stock in '87 with 85,000 miles with the sole intention of creating a street driven road course car.

I threw out the rear seat, added a tach, Pirelli P77's and a hand me down set of small diameter sway bars and a set of KYB Gas-A-Just shocks. I was ready to take my ICSCC class so that I could begin my novice license journey. I soon fell under the watchful eye of a great guy and my racing mentor Walt. He owned a VW repair shop and raced a '76 Scirocco. He gave my free reign of his shop, gave me some parts at cost and others as "freebies"! He even had his mechanics (including himself) help me when I was under the gun for a race, or simply over my head.
One of my favorite comments in my novice notebook came from a senior observer stating that "The driver is utilizing 100% of his cars ability. Move him directly to full driver status".
Soon the car had custom racing springs, Bilsteins, and a 6 point roll cage. I was also running shaved BFG Comp T/A's, stripped ever ounce I could from the car, added a SuperTrapp exhaust and replaced the 1500cc motor with a warmed over 1600cc one.

I raced this car for 2 1/2 years and being only one of two street driven cars in a class of 44 cars, I was very happy with a 9th place overall for a season. I still remember other racers towing thier cars to the track and watching them shake there heads at me as I passed them on the freeway "driving" my race car with a fuel jug, my racing suit, and a set of shaved tires sitting in the rear hatch area.
Walt talked me into competing in the "Seattle Cup Series" which is a combined ICSCC and SCCA series where drivers of both sanctioning bodies where welcomed. I ended up taking 1st place in my class for the series!
By then I was bitten by the "go faster" bug. I sold my Rabbit and bought a '71 240Z and started gathering parts to get it on the track. One day I added up what it was going to cost me to build the car I wanted and decided that if I opted out of racing I could have money for other things.
I sold the Z to a buddy who eventually finished it. Meanwhile I bought a brand new Toyota pickup seen on another page, and soon after traded it for a new '92 Toyota 4Runner and a '16 Invader shown on another page here.
