Restoration 2007.............
After 18 years, I have finally broken down and decide to restore the body of my 70 Chevelle SS. Back in 1988, I did the first restoration of the car. During that phase, I replaced all the front end sheet metal, bumbers, chrome, etc......... Also over the years, I have done other projects on the car that compared to a frame off restoration.....body mounts, fuel and brake lines, suspension replacement and up grades, new interior, new dash, new wiring, etc....
This time around, I am having the car repainted. For this restoration, the front end and body with stay on the frame. I will be removing the hood, deck lid, and doors. The car will be stripped down to bare metal and all the body work redone. Please note the the car still has her orginal doors and quarters which will stay intact!!! The Velle will be painted the stock color of Fathom Blue and (finally) the white racing stripes. During the restoration, I will update the site with pictures of the different phases.
Working in my garage on the "Velle". I spent a month getting the garage set up with lights, electric, workbenches...etc.
The Teardown Phase
During my Christmas week off of work (2006), I tore down the car and started to get it ready to go to the restoration shop. They are picking the car up in mid January of 2007. Here are a few pictures of the tear down.
The front end slowwing coming apart.........
Stripped!!!!
You can't see it in the picture, I need to repair the passenger firewall at the seam for floorboard. Addionally, I need to weld in the mounting hardware for the bucket seats. The car is orginally a bench seat car. Just think, I just installed a new interior 8 months ago!!! Oh well, everything is back in the box for another 6 months:-).
This shot is the damage that I recently did to the left quarter...OUCH!!! Careful with Cragars, their lug nuts have the tendency to loosen!!! I lost rear wheel as I left a cruise nite in Howell, NJ. Luckly I was going slow. The damage could have been a lot worse!!!!
