It has been a very stressful day at your local Wal-Mart store, shopping for the best deals on products, looking at unsupervised kids running around tearing up stuff and fighting the long lines for thirty-five minutes to check out at the counter. You are beat and you come outside, pushing your buggy to have to walk the long row of cars just to get to yours.

Something happens to catch your eye when you finally approach your vehicle. Parked right next to you is a very attractive looking car that has been nicely modified. The rims are a good size, the paint looks pretty good, its lowered at a perfect height and even has a decent set of aftermarket exterior goodies you wish you had for your car.

Beside the fact that a jacka$$ that parked on the other side of this vehicle has carelessly opened their door and placed a slight dent on the passenger side fender, not concerned about the little scratches from missing the key hole or even ignoring the small crack from the windshield, you imagine yourself owning this vehicle reguardless of its imperfections.

We have come across something of a scenario like this at least once in our Car Domain lives. A nice looking whip someone has put together that takes your attention from what ever you were doing for just one moment and despite the issues it may have on the car, you still place in your mind the good things about the car and overlook the bad. This is called, "Perfect Imperfections".

I have received positive comments on my daily driven, 1990 Acura Integra GS from others that have stopped me to praise my work. I have imperfections that need to be addressed and people tend not to care about those, even at small local car events. These compliments give me more inspiration on trying to make things perfect for the future.

This is my project car, once known as Project D.A Beta. Naming it to be related to that of a Star Wars religion, Siths' use the DarkSide of the force through pain, anger and suffering. Project D.A Beta has turned to the DarkSide because it seeks more power and control. Through its pain, it has caused me suffering and anger, and with that it shall be known as "DArth NEMISIS".

The story behind the pain and anger was the fact that this was once an LS/VTEC turbo set up. I assumed that the 238k mile stock block had given up on me and could not handle the boost any more sometime, back in late April of '08. I started purchasing parts for  the bottom end to be repaired until my friend, Lewis Banks of 2 Bar Performance in Haltom City, TX could pull out the motor and inspect the blocks condition.

Lewis called me just after I had ordered all the necessary parts needed for a strong block build, and informed me the bottom end was not the problem. My VTEC cylinder head had a dropped  valve, destroying the #1 piston! The valve then popped back up and trashed the cylinder head. I was already on a tight budget with this build and could not afford to replace the VTEC head, so I brought in my old LS head to take over the duties of the top end.

I need to aquire another VTEC cylinder head sometime in the future. My set-up just missed the 400 hp mark because of the LS head. Tony informed me a VTEC cylinder head would have earned me 70 more hp! I miss my LS/VTEC, but for me to do this with my built bottom end, I need to upgrade my fuel injectors from 550cc to 720cc and a stage 3 clutch.

It seems kinda of @$$ backwards, but the first pic (top right) is that of the stock block with LS/VTEC turbo before the valve dropped on the #1 piston and destroyed the cylinder head. The second pic (bottom left), and current set up now is with my old LS head and well built bottom end (no pun intended/LOL).

To those of you who happen to be a resident of the Lone Star State of Texas, you should know that it is a MUST that Texans have air conditioning during the summer/fall months. To those that are second gen Integra owners that have or want a turbo, should know that it is HARD to have both luxaries because of the location of the a/c and power steering in the engine compartment. With  temperatures at 100 degrees, sometimes three and even four weeks straight, I was not going to compromise my comfort of air conditioning for power.

Well with the pictures above, I paid a pretty penny to have 2 1/2 inch intake and intercooler piping to be routed to where the battery once was located, then having to relocate the battery to the trunk. All this to retain my a/c and power steering!

The budget of this build has exceeded to $16k (including the purchase of the car), That is the MSRP from Acura back in 1990 for this model. I had to do alot of turbo research before doing this and the patience of taking my time kind of fell off, now that I know how important it is to have a block that can handle the pressure. But even then, I still am curious to how that valve had loosened from its keeper from my VTEC head?

Must I brake it down for you/Had the oppurtunity to meet with Kenny Tran and his Jotech Racing Team in 2007 at a local event outside of Dallas at the Texas Motorplex Dragway.

After the tuning session, the car is in good health, running 15 psi daily. With the Hondata S100 (even though it is an older standalone system)  my car idles like any well maintained car on the road, just under 1k rpms.

There are no check lights or gremlins effecting the now converted OBD-1 ecu and the gas milage is fairly good at around 21 miles per gallon on 93 octain. With the YS1 transmission, in 5th gear, the Integra is out of boost and revs @ 3.1k rpms at a 70 mph cruise on the highway.

Power is great once the T3/T4 hits full boost @ 4K rpms all the way to 7.2k redline. 16 psi is max for now, but will only turn up the boost during some friendly competition at the track. 

Reguardless that I have the older model Hondata hardware, the truth is, it is best to have a standalone computer for your set up and have it tuned. I beleive the software and the tuning session was the gem of the entire project. No W.O.T  tune either (wide open throttle). I'm talking about fine tuning, getting the right air/ fuel ratio across the entire rpm range. The best investment yet. I highly recommend it.
