I will admit that when the new GTO's came out, I was something of a naysayer! I didn't like the styling. I didn't like that it was assembled over-seas. I didn't like that it was a "corporate" Pontiac. I am here to tell you that that is a bunch of rubbish. This car is everything that a GTO should be and more. Forget about Australia. There is nothing more American than a GM produced V-8 torque monster. Forget about the bland styling. Trust me, the looks grow on you after a little seat time. Forget about the "corporate" stigma. This things drives like a Pontiac; fast, loud, and with attitude. I'll always love the classic Goats for what they were, but by the same token, I know that I'll also love the new Goats ,from now on, for what THEY are, and for all that they bring to the table. It is interesting to compare my '65 to my '05, and see the tangible evidence of what 40 years of automotive advancement have wrought. And yet there is still a shared intangible between the two. A similarity in function if not form, thats speaks to the American love of automotives. The hot rod potential. The thrill of driving. The ability to blow the doors off nearly anything on four wheels. The sound of an American V-8 turning fuel into heat, heat into torque, and torque into a healthy rumble, and a feeling of exhilaration that has made us a nation addicted to the open road.
I purchased my '05 from a dealership in Dallas/Ft. Worth, and had it delivered to me sight unseen. Truth be told, I had never even sat in a new GTO. It was delivered with 7714 miles on the digital odometer. I have only had it a week, and it has changed how I look at newer cars in general. This car is just an awesome, awesome ride. Of course there will always be something out there faster, but dollar for dollar this has to be one of the greatest performance cars ever!
