HOW WE DID IT
This was probably the scariest things we have ever done. The thought of taking your stock pieces and painting them. Ugh, what if they don't turn out well. Then you have to buy all new pieces. Well the pressure was on.
First we removed each of the pieces we wanted to paint. Now we wanted to strip any of the old silicone from years of using interior protectant and shine. We achieved this by using liquid dish soap. Also, we wanted to help form a bond between the plastic and paint. You get this when you sand the part. Some choose to slick the part when painting, but we decided to leave the parts natural texture. The trick was to use a WET red scotchbrite pad with the liquid soap on the part. So not only were we striping the part, but giving it a light sanding as well. Next we washed the part until we could slip it in the water without the part repelling the water.
Once we felt confident that we had gotten any of the old film off, we let the part dry. Once they were dry we put on rubber gloves to keep our finger oils from contaminating the part. We then took a clean paper towel and soaked it in alcohol and wiped the part. We wiped each part with a different towel. Also wiping each part multiple times, again with a clean towel. Again we left the parts to dry. With the gloves on, you can check the parts to be sure there is no towel residue.
We decided to match the body color, so that required us to use a tri-stage paint process. I started with silver. Then layered with a metallic transparent red until the color matched the body's paint. To be sure all of the parts match each other, I painted them all at the same time, being sure to spray the same amount of red paint layers. See, when you layer transparent red it gets darker. Then it was time to clear.
We got lucky and they came out perfect!
