2002 Camaro SS Limited Edition (LE)

My wife calls her "La Otra Mujer" - The Other Woman

2002 was the final year of the Camaro following 35 years of production. Scott Settlemire, Chevrolet's Camaro / Corvette Team Chief, had his team create this final limited edition Camaro taking a little bit of each generation in order to produce a truly remarkable collector car.

The 2002 year model was produced at the Saint Therese GM Plant in Canada. Additional Second Sticker options, or Y2Y contents, were available from Street Legal Performance (SLP) resulting in the same type of legendary vehicles created by Yenko and Baldwin Motion back in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

All of the 2002 Camaro SS LEs are based upon a Z28 platform. They received additional performance modifications in the form of the SS options. Y2Y Second Sticker options from SLP could only be ordered directly from the dealership. All LEs share the same paint and stripes; Red with Silver checkered stripes and they were either a T-top or convertible model. They also share the 35th Anniversary Limited Edition SS emblem.

There were a total of 3,369 LEs produced during the Camaro line's final year. The first and the last were placed in the GM museum. Number 3,368 was auctioned off for $71,500. 369 LEs were produced for sale in Canada and the remaining 2,997 were destined for the United States.

"La Otra Mujer" is car # 1242 of the 3,369 produced. Of the 41,777 Camaros built in 2002, ours is # 3028 to receive SLP options. GM informed us that our LE is # 52 of 934 T-tops with automatic transmission optioned (CC1/MX0) cars. It is completely original (minus the oil, gas in the tank, and the tires) AND it is driven daily.

We are Co-Founders of the Fayetteville F-Body Association. We support other local car clubs such as the Cape Fear Cruizers, Hope Mills Cruizers and the Cape Fear Classics. Additionally, we are members of 35THLE.com, which is a site that caters to owner's of the 35th Anniversary Camaro SS Limited Edition model. We enjoy taking our LE to car shows and it has turned out to be a wonderful family event.

We are planning on making only a few bolt-on modifications to our car since we want to maintain it as close to OEM without any major changes. The only modifications that we've done thus far have been only parts which were available from SLP or GMMG at the time of order and/or a few additional ones.

We thought about porting the TB but decided to go with a VaraRam VR-3 insert instead which gives us close to the same effect as porting. We've also added the TB Bypass, Smooth Bellow, 85mm MAF, and replaced the stock SLP Center Mount Exhaust (CME) with a GMMG chambered setup. We did keep the CME in the rear and just replaced the "I" pipe and the over-axle system itself (CATBACK). Awesome sound!! The GMMG chambered was offered on the Performance Editions (PEs) that were further upgrades of the LEs. Our latest edition as of May 2008 was a set of long tube emission headers by American Racing Headers.

There are three reasons we decided to go with ARH. These headers are American made right here in the good ole U.S.A. Secondly, I was considering QTPs but found out that their Y pipe is made of aluminum while the ARH is a completely stainless steel setup. What's the purpose in having a stainless exhaust system that isn't all stainless? Finally, and of the most important, Nick, owner of ARH. Nick called my home three times to talk to me about my order. ARH doesn't produce these systems on an assembly line, but rather each set is custom made. I got a great deal on these. They install as if the engine were on an engine stand!! No issues what so ever!!

Understand that the car, in original form, was 345 HP and since GM under-rated the LEs by 30 HP, we're actually talking 375 HP stock. Along with the ARHs and our other MODs, roughly totaling 85 HP, put us in the neighborhood of 424 HP at the crank (BHP), rear is probably around 335 (RWHP) or so. We're not really sure of actual numbers but that is our best estimate for now. Plus throw in the Royal Purple (RP) for an additional 5 HP as advertised. We think we're doing ok.

Update (12MAR08): We dyno'd at Ryan's Performance Machines (RPM) in Garner, NC (The only place to go in NC by the way!). We were close. The actual numbers turned out to be 318.51RWHP and 337.51 lbs-ft. That equates, with a 30% loss for the auto, to be 414.063 BHP and 439.153BFT-TQ. My guess was 427BHP and 443BLBS-FT. Not bad for just the few things that we've done!

All of the MODs can be removed with just a little effort. Perhaps with a few more MODs, including a head and cam package, we could see up to 400 RWHP. Perhaps a ProCharger in a year or so?.. But we haven't decided if we want to do some of those alterations. We thought about dual turbos but decided not to go that route for sure since we'd loose the CME.

The wife has given me the go ahead to purchase a crate LS7, but I haven't decided about that since it would definitely change the car. Another SS purchase in the future in the form of a Blue or White 02 SS and play with it perhaps?... But, for now its just maintain, keep on showing the LE, and enjoy!

We added the SLP ZL7 badge because we liked the badge much better than the 400 Power Pack emblem. We don't have many things left that we wish to do. The exception would be adding an under-drive pulley setup along with a few suspension mods and perhaps a new set of gears.

We now run Royal Purple (RP) Oil which is a true synthetic oil. We used to run only MOBIL 1 but it is no longer a true synthetic. The RP has gotten me an additional 2.5mpg in town and I swear the engine runs much smoother and acceleration has improved a well. I now get 18.23mpg IN TOWN!

The LE Portfolio

The 35th Limited Edition was accompanied with a leather bound portfolio. Only enough portfolios were produced to match the number of LE's made and they cannot be purchased any longer. The delivery method of the portfolio to the owners changed as production of the cars went forward.
