IBM-Tech's Nightmare

07011965's 1987 Chevrolet Camaro/> </a> <a title=

IBM-Tech's 1987 Chevrolet CamaroThis is the 1st picture of my CAMARO taken in 1988.  It came from the factory with a 305 TPI and a 700r4 transmission. You can see the custom IROC-Z bra and the factory GM louvers. It was a good looking car and fast for it's time but, I knew it needed something. If I only knew then what I was going to get into. I would have quit many years ago. Scroll through the pages to check the transformatino of my beast.

IBM-Tech's 1987 Chevrolet CamaroMy RPO Code sheet from the Center Console Lid. I have heard of many people getting rid of their RPO Sheets.. This is a bad thing as it tells you about everything about your specific camaro.

IBM-Tech's 1987 Chevrolet CamaroHere is a little history about my project. I pulled the 305 TPI and put a 91 Corvette L98 engine in. I didn't have the time to work on it myself and didn't know what would be involved. I had an inexperienced mechanic work on my car who claims to know everything about performance engines, I found the Distrib was loose, The valves weren't adjusted, Plug Wires mixed up, Vacuum Leaks, ETC.. ETC.. I wasn't sure if I would ever be happy and pulled everything and started from scratch again. I learned a hard lesson, Never go cheap the 1st time. It only gets means you have to spend more the 2nd time to get it done right.

IBM-Tech's 1987 Chevrolet CamaroThis was the 350 Vette TPI Motor with non working S/C and N2O after I got the engine to run by doing it myself. The engine was running at this point but had some mysterious engine knock between 2400rpms and 5800rpms. It appears the mechanic who rebuilt the L98 didn't balance anything, Plus he used the wrong flywheel and used the FMU and Timing Boost Master. You can see on this picture that I removed the Supercharger horn and had to run the stock air cleaner with a Mass Air Flow Sensor. The only performance parts on this engine was SLP Siamese Intake Manifolds and the High Flow Edelbrock Intake manifold and SLP Air Foil.

IBM-Tech's 1987 Chevrolet CamaroThe Car before Paint and with the L98 Vette Engine. I will make it look and perform much better in the future. I am getting tired of every turbocharged 4 cylinder in NY beating me. The License Plate {BLWN Z28} should mean something more than a poorly built engine. I am at this point very unhappy with the overall appearance and performance of the car.

IBM-Tech's 1987 Chevrolet Camaro This is the last picture of the original TPI vette Motor with S/C. I raced a Suburu WRX and lost to him after several programs on ECM. Now I am more determinded to beat him. I purchased a TPIS Mini-ram, Crower Blower Cam, 60# Injectors, 58mm TB, new 3:73 Gears and many other toys. Time to start with the drive train. I am going to beat him.. This is already starting to be costly though.

IBM-Tech's 1987 Chevrolet CamaroThis is the new hood unpainted on the car. I put it up for the winter because NY has 2 seasons, (RAIN & WINTER) LOL..  This will give me plenty of time to work on it and it needs alot of body work to get this looking better. I never knew fiberglass would be so hard to work with. My friend Rick is pretty good at painting and he is going to help me spray.

IBM-Tech's 1987 Chevrolet CamaroHood Painted and Hardening up.. Had a difficult time getting the matching paint code. Then we had to Repaint it twice as we discovered that bugs love clear coat.. (DUH) There are some minor flaws in the paint that I will am going to let go. Future lesson learned, Keep the garage doors closed after spraying until Paint and Clear hardens up no matter how cloudy it is in the garage!!!!

IBM-Tech's 1987 Chevrolet CamaroInner Fenders and firewall painted, clear coated and almost ready to drop the engine in. Should be ready within a week to get this accomplished. I am finding it really hard to get anything done because of minimal time. Alot of time was taken up preparing the car for paint.

IBM-Tech's 1987 Chevrolet CamaroThis is the program that I use to help tune this beast. Tuner Pro RT has the capability of running real time tuning with the right equipment. I also purchased the Autoprom so I can do Read, Erase, Burn and emulate on all ODB-I Cars. When running a $59 code on a 122749 you can see on the table on the left a few of many items that can be adjusted to get your car running just right. I have found that you can really screw it up too.

Thanks for checking out my project and Please don't forget RATE my Camaro
