I picked up this 1985 MR2 for $400 in running condition with just over 85,000 miles. It needed a new clutch ($600) and it was ready to run. I did spend 3 weeks trying to get it to start (new fuel pump which is a crappy job, pull the alternator, check the battery...no luck) Turns out it had a hidden security system cut-off switch! Grrrrrr.
My Mechanic!
I was driving it off and on, then a family member drove it and didn't put it in gear when they parked it. Since I hadn't reconnected the parking brake yet, it rolled down the driveway and crunched up the fender. (ouch)
The decision to replace the fender (a bolt-on part) led to the need for some paint. I decided to fix some rust spots while I was at it. Turns out, more of the car was rusted than was whole! I replaced both rear fenders (a weld-on job) and heavily repaired the floors. Practially stripped the car to a bare shell in the process. Replaced bumper supports, painted all trim pieces, fixed what I could. I masked and prepped everything and My buddy Earl Scheib did the paint.
In the end, it looks good from 10 feet away and this car is a driver so I am happy with that. I got to start enjoying it for a while.
